Okay, so I have been wanting to tell people this story for a long time, so, what the f*ck? This is the story of how I became a brony... *dolly zoom and fade*
It all started on a warm Saturday morning of 2011, then again, in Florida, every morning is warm, but that's beside the point. Anyway, I was in the car listening to NPR which, for those of you who don't know, stands for National Public Radio. Well, every Saturday at 10 am EST, NPR airs a show called, "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me..." If you listen to this show, then you probably know where I'm going with this. "WWDTM" is a game show hosted by Peter Sagal and Carl Castle. In the show, they play various games with listeners and a set of three panelists from a list that they cycle through. (The list includes comedians and journalists like Paula Poundstone, Roxanne Roberts, Adam Felber, Mo Rocca, and several others.) One of these games is called "Bluff the Listener," in which each panelist tells a story with the same basic theme, and the listener contestant has to guess which one is right. Well, the theme in this particular episode was, "Things that Met a Different Demographic than Expected." I'm sure you can guess what the correct story was.
That was the first I had ever heard of Bronies. I thought it was a little odd, as I'm sure everyone else did. But I wasn't completely freaked out or anything, after all I had heard of a lot weirder hobbies. But, here's the best part. So the panelists and hosts of WWDTM made fun of the Bronies, to the point where several Brony listeners and even a former intern of the show sent them demands for an apology... And they got one. The very next week, in another one of their games, called "Not My Job," where they have a famous person call in and ask them three multiple-choice questions about something completely unrelated to what they are famous for. The celebrity guest that week, was former president Bill Clinton. Now what could they possibly ask him about that he wouldn't know of? Well, they killed two birds with one stone and asked him three questions about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, all of which he got right, like a baws.
That was the last I heard of the Brony fandom for quite some time. A few months later, I started getting more active on the internet. I started looking at reddit, started browsing deviantART, but not 4chan... NEVER AGAIN. Anyway, I noticed Bronies were very common on these sites, which did not bother me in the slightest. Well eventually, I found out that a friend at my school was a Pegasister, again, I wasn't bothered by it, but I found her openness on the subject rather odd. After that, I said, "Fuck it!" And in July of 2012, I went on YouTube and looked up the first episode. I have been watching ever since.
Okay, you know my story, now I want to hear yours. How did you guys discover My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?
