Champion: Candy Cane

Appearance: White coat, red mane, red eyes. Cutie mark is a red medical cross.

Abilities: Can manipulate blood into solid objects.

Equipment: Carries a scalpel for the purpose of giving herself a small cut and magicking a shape from the blood. She can harden the blood over her cut to prevent too much blood loss.
Also in possession of a cloak, hat and scarf which have no real purpose other than travelling.

Personality: Not of sound mind. Believes herself to be a monster or freak due to her unique ability. Usually not very trusting of new people (except in some special circumstances, for example if alcohol is involved), but will develop strong emotional attachments to those who have shown her kindness.
Unbeknownst to her as of arriving in Vemn Enox, she has a separate personality which perfectly fits the general assumptions towards blood mages, in that it is bloodthirsty and psychotic, as well as being much more adept at using blood magic. This other side of her surfaces when she tries to test the limits of her powers, but is also responsible for the occasional twitching she is afflicted with when certain topics are brought up.
This other personality’s name is Silynn, and she eventually submits to Candy after being defeated in a battle staged in a dreamscape conjured by a friend of Candy’s.

Story: Candy Cane was born and grew up in Ponyville. She spent most of her time time at home practising her magic, which she had never been much good at, having only mastered simple telekinesis in school. However, her constant training and refinement of this one skill granted her incredible precision over manipulated objects.

In the meantime, to make up for her not attending school, her parents hired a tutor to make sure she didn't fall too far behind in her studies. Thanks to this, she was able to graduate and started down the path of becoming a surgeon, given her qualifications. She finally earned her cutie mark when she was accepted into medical school.

It was during her first real operation that she discovered her unique ability. She was incredibly nervous throughout the procedure and was in the process of passing the lead surgeon a scalpel when a sudden spurt of blood from the patient startled her, causing her to drop the scalpel, slashing her own leg.

Panicking, she called upon whatever magic she could to keep the blood from flowing, and was rather astounded to discover the wound was sealed by her own blood, which had formed a solid shell over the cut.

Unfortunately, her lapse in concentration cost the patient's life, and she held herself responsible, along with a few of her colleagues. She was brought to a hearing, where her peculiar magic was discussed, and the best course of action was decided that she should be committed to an asylum after being declared dangerous to society for use of unknown magic.

This portion of her sentence was discussed and decided by a secretive division of the Royal Guard, specifically implemented to deal with possibly dangerous users of forbidden magics. Due to her lack of any real training in the craft, they decided she could simply locked away under the pretense of mental instability, rather than the fact that she had demonstrated use of a forbidden magic.

They deduced that she had not known what she was doing, but were unwilling to take the risk of allowing her to go back to her regular life. The asylum she was imprisoned in was not made aware of her abilities, as the authorities kept them on a need-to-know basis. They did, however, recommend that Candy should be placed under 24-hour surveillance, which was agreed to.

Candy Cane spent her time locked away brooding over the meaning of her imprisonment, as well as training her blood magic as often as she could, either by biting herself in her cell, or smuggling a sharp object in somehow. After a few years locked up, she managed to convince the staff that she was fit to be moved out of constant surveillance, into a regular cell, having memorised the usual questions they asked and the right answers.

One fateful night, an intern, pushing a trolley of medical equipment to the storeroom, caught her practising her blood magic in her cell. He ran to inform the staff, but Candy Cane stopped him using her magic and killed him in panic. Scared, she hid his body in a broom cupboard and snuck out of the facility that night, using his uniform and keys and swiping a scalpel from the trolley.

She didn't get far before the body was found and her cell was discovered empty.
Security guards set after her, as well as a squad of royal guard pegasi after the facility informed the authorities of her potential danger to ponykind.

She escaped to the Everfree forest, at which point the guards stopped chasing her. Feeling ashamed and disgusted with herself, she knew she could not return to society. Instead, she set out to survive in the harsh environment of the Everfree forest.
