Boltstrike Movie Reviews: Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire · 3:02am April 6th
Luckily, I'm not as late on the draw this time. I will be saying things that are spoilers for this movie, but I'll try my best to mark them.
Overall, this isn't as good as Godzilla vs. Kong, at least for me, but it's still pretty good. For one thing, it takes a bit of time to actually get to the kaiju stuff, and we're stuck on human characters for a while. Still, the human element in the movie is alright, even though it's not my favorite in the Monsterverse. Trapper is a surprisingly funny human character. Kong and Godzilla are both as good as ever, though I will say that Godzilla kinda gets screwed in the story department, like in Godzilla vs. Kong. I get that it's easier to build a connection with Kong, and Godzilla's more indifferent to humans, but come on. I do have to stay, one of my favorite things is the relationship between Kong and Suko, all of which is done without any dialogue.
As for our new antagonists, the Skar King is a pretty good villain, though not as threatening as Ghidorah (though let's be honest, no Monsterverse villain is as evil as Ghidorah). The movie does a good job of showing his sadistic and sociopathic nature, and his death was quite satisfactory. Shimo was basically his attack dog, though I will give the movie credit that it doesn't waste the chance to have her take her revenge on him the second Suko destroys his control crystal.
Finally, I think my biggest complaint is the whole fight in Egypt. It just feels like padding. Come on, Godzilla, Kong saved your hide in the last movie! But it does give us an excuse to have Mothra and Godzilla reunite, so I'll allow it.
Overall, not the greatest sequel, but pretty solid. 7.5/10.
