My thoughts on the TTYD Remake · 5:07pm Oct 25th, 2023
Before I begin, friendly reminder that I am running a poll right now: https://strawpoll.com/poy9WlbO3gJ
Now with that out of the way, since the hype of this has died down, let me share my own thoughts about this remake. Of course I'm going to get it day one, but there are a couple of things I wish to say about it. The first is that part of me almost wants this remake to do barely better sales wise then Origami King did just to confuse the hell out of Nintendo as the ultimate payback for not doing this sooner. But realistically, I know that the die hards who grew up with how Paper Mario was before Sticker Star came along and ruined the series for the worst will be buying the remake like hot cakes. At best, I see the Thousand Year Door remake becoming the second highest selling Switch Game. No, I'm not joking when I say second highest selling and not the highest selling Switch Game. Again, let's be realistic here: Not a single game is going to top Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at this point. Not with the booster course pass in play which will be wrapping up this holiday season. So if anything, I expect lots of people buying the game and it's DLC in bulk if they haven't already for christmas this year. The sheer volume of content is too much to ignore, so I'm being realistic when I say at best, The Thousand Year Door remake could get second highest selling Switch Game. Let's face it, nothing is beating Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's numbers at this point, not by a long shot.
But the second thing is actually a concern I have. And it's a concern I haven't seen anyone else adress at this point. And it revolves around the pianta palor. While most have focused on whether or not the Japanese content will be in the remake outside of japan as a potential toggle or if it'll be left out of the international release a second time, I am more concerned about the Pianta Palor and it's mini-games. As Pokemon fans would know, as early as HGSS, Game Freak was already removing outright gambling from their Pokemon games with there being no signs of gambling what-so-ever starting in BW1 with remakes such as ORAS and BDSP removing the game corner outright. This was done because that simiulated gambling would qualify the series for a higher rating and might potentially end up making the games become regulated. I bring this up because the Pianta Palor is essentially the game corner of TTYD and I am worried that it might either be changed drastically, or removed outright in the remake unless Nintendo just does not care that much since they could just placating the fans.
But considering how much attention they were willing to give towards the TTYD remake by making it that last thing at the end of the last direct? I highly doubt Nintendo would just not care that much. Then again, this is Nintendo we are talking about here. They are known to make controversial decision after controversial decision; make no mistake about that.
