Anyone wanna brainstorm? · 3:57pm Aug 7th, 2023

I have an idea for another bug species that behaves like a living radio. It can pick up all kinds of music and sounds they hear and transmit it amongst themselves for others to hear.

It'd be fun if anyone would like to add to this, even if it's small! So far, I'm settled on calling them "Echo's", but I'm open to better ones, lol

Do you want them to be it's own species or can it be a sort of sub-species?

It's own species, I suppose

Oki, give me a sec and I will return, just need to finish my food.

Oki, I'm back. So a bug species, are you going with a equine shape or other?

Because I have one idea so far, don't know if you already thought about it. Like many bugs you can use their antennas for communication, so what if we use something like that, their antennas are normally resting against the length of their body (the antennas can be as long or shorter then the body) and when they are receiving or sending they raises the antennas almost strait up in a small ark or something. I know this is not much but there's so many questions I can ask.

Like wings: yay or nay.

Well, checking Wikipedia the ethnology of the word “echo” is:

The word echo derives from the Greek ἠχώ (ēchō), itself from ἦχος (ēchos), "sound".

So instead of calling them just “Echo” you could go for “Ēchō” or “Ēchos”. Adding some extra punctuation to the name might set them apart a bit more, plus it sells that idea that they are “fantastic” better.

Also, “Echo” in Greek mythology was a woman who was coursed by the gods, she could only form sentences with words she had just heard. You could build a myth around them, an explanation as to why they are like that’s

Alternatively, you could put a spin in the concept of a “Flea circus” and make it an “Echo’s orchestra” (or Echos concert). Basically instead of a little circus display powered by a motor with the flea attached to it, is a mini orchestra with the Echos attacked to instruments and a sound system playing music. Or maybe a small song is play, and the expectable/entertainment is watching/listening the Echos twist and change the music completely.

Heh, this is for an original fantasy world I'm crafting, nothing MLP-related lol.

That's kind of the idea, yeah! Like an Echo could just be sitting in a field or a beach and transferring those calming noises to another Echo through their antennas. Or a concert, a speech, etc. Anything that would be broadcasted on a radio.

Maybe they can have wings? They just don't use them often.

5741120
I almost considered "Inverteb-Radio", but I'm leaving that as a name for the programs creatures create around the bugs. 🤣

My intrusive thoughts wanted to point out that the plural of "echo" is "echoes." Sorry :twilightsheepish:

oki, okay, I love all things RPG old time GM my self. 😀

Then the biggest question about this Echos is are they aggressive?
territory? are having them as nomadic: I can she a swarm of Echos joining together moving form one place to the next to try and collect the most tasty music and sound.

5741124
They are peaceful creatures, but they can defend themselves with loud soundwaves. Bass is their strongest weapon, XD

They are very social bugs. They're all connected to one another and can request to share certain music, sounds, or messages when others use them. They can be anywhere in the world.

5741126
Nice you got a good base for as I can see it. Is there anything specific you want help with?
Something you feel uncertain about?
Sorry I might be ranting are you going to use them as playable race?
Then I have many question to ask.

5741130
Heh, just came up with it today on the spot, XD

I'm open to anything, if any cool features can be added. 🤓

Playable?

5741132
hehe, sorry my brain went into RPG mode. Playable is when players can play them if you make it an rp game. But this is just world building. Sorry, I get to exited when it comes to this. 😅

Features: They can look like normal bugs, or we can make them humanoid (like they have 2 legs and 4 arms kinda stuff), or more like crypt fiend (archne vibe) from warcraft. There're so much.

5741135
Lol, it's for a fantasy novel series I'm making, HeartWood.

Heh, I want them to be kinda cute. With stubby crab-like legs, a beetle mouth, and eyes like the MLP changelings. They communicate through beatbox-like sounds, but it's more buzzing and clicking. When they fly, it sounds like that vibration you hear when the bass shakes your car, XD

5741136
Oki let's see if I can give a quick description, this will not be canon. I hope this will help a little, you can add that they have fine fur over their shell they can put leaves and small bushes so they can hide themself.

Echoes:
A lovely bug race in a size of a cat/dog (can be bigger). They're strong legs like that of a crab for travel, a hard shell for defense, their maws are like that of a beetle strong enough to crush the hardest rock. Eyes with a slight shine to them can be seen at night. They're a very social as they can been seen close to settlements as their favorite thing to do is collect music and sound, it's not uncommon too see a group of Echoes near festivals and carnivals. They collect these sound to share with other of their kind.
There's a saying that if a traveler is followed by an Echo, he/she will have a lucky travels.

Their diet is mostly fruits and berries or whatever the settlers give them.

If threatened the Echoes will use a sound blast first as a warning, if the threat still linger they will get hit by the blast. If the threat survive or flee the Echo will share the threats sound with other Echoes so they will not fall pray of the threat.

Hey, that isn’t a bad idea

I hope I was of some help for, good luck and have fun.

5741142
It's interesting, lol

Almost anything is possible in my novel's universe as long as it fits the fantasy setting.

Are the echos able to adjust the pitch of the sound they emit? Can they interpret the supersonic sounds of other animals or simply hear them? e.g. bats. Can they mimic those supersonic sounds? With enough practice could they eventually learn to emulate vocal communication or at least build a rudimentary form of communication? e.g. like Helen Keller did.

5741182
When I read they can transmit music and sounds they heard, I immediately thought translator. Sorry if it was more of a questionary than a brainstorming.

5741186
It's fine. I was just going simple. I'm not savvy with the technicals of sound or frequencies, XD

Transmitters?

5741337
Like, Radio Transmitters? Transmitters?
