0/5: MY EYEEEESSS!!!

Greetings, folks. This is Mr. J back with another TV show review for today. This evening, I will be reviewing “Beast Wars: Transformers” which ran from 1996-1999. This was a very well-crafted animated series with an actual storyline, real character development, and world-building. It is vastly superior to the original animated series in every way except, perhaps, for its heavily-outdated computer animation. Regardless, this show was amazing to watch, and it got more interesting as the series went on.

This directly follows the G1 continuity where the brave Maximals battle against the power-hungry Predacons once they crash-land in an unknown world. As descendants of Autobots and Decepticons respectively, they battle for the ages to come until they go back in time when their ancestors crash-landed on Earth. There, the fate of the whole universe, space, and time rests on the Maximals to stop the Predacons before history is changed for the worst.

Like I said, it has so much more backstory for the characters involved which made me interested in them. All the characters have distinct personalities, objectives, and mindsets to tell them apart, and every character was well-written to the last detail. What’s even more interesting is that both factions have flaws of character—including the Maximals despite being the good guys. Unlike the original series, the good guys learn a lesson and they stick with it for the remainder of the series.

Even the Predacons were well-developed! Megatron is definitely one of my favorite characters in this show, and I absolutely love his memorable lines…especially his iconic catchphrase. Yeeeesssss! Oh, David Kaye was the perfect choice to voice him; his sexy tone, and his calm, savvy demeanor made him so attractive as a villain. Yeeesssss…

My other favorite characters are Rattrap, Dinobot, Blackarachnia, Optimus Primal, Waspinator, Tarantulas, and Silverbolt. These characters had such unique character arcs that made them stand out from the others, and their voice actors did their fantastic work in making them feel alive and real. Scott McNeil, Gary Chalk, Alec Willows, and Venus Terzo…shout-out to each of them! Plus, the way McNeil voiced four of these characters just proves his amazing vocal range.

I love how most of the Predacons, aside from Megatron, have agendas of their own and plotted to betray him to seize power for their own different causes. That shows how evil can manifest itself in different ways and can easily blind anyone who lusts for power. The writing is just immaculate.

Furthermore, this series shows us a different side to Transformers. These aren't the original Cybertronians who can transform into cars, trucks, planes, or any power-driven device. These guys transform into animals or creatures who are more prone to vulnerability…like how humans are. They can sleep, eat, and show affection. Even more intriguing, due to how dangerously high the Energon levels are on Earth, they have to limit their use of robot forms for a shorter amount of time as long as they are in the outside world. Thus, they are in beast mode most of the time. Man, the amount of detail they put in this series is awesome.

The storyline is so interesting that it keeps you watching more episodes because you simply cannot wait to see what happens next. It really made me wonder, “How will the Maximals survive this?” and “How are they gonna beat Megatron?” Not only is the action fun to watch but the storytelling accompanies it to make them more meaningful.

The only objective flaw this show has is the outdated animation. I personally don’t even care about that because I watched this show for the story and action, not the animation. Plus, it’s Transformers. Can’t miss out on that, you know?

Overall, “Beast Wars” is so iconic that later TF series would make references to it, re-introduce the same characters, modernize them, and even make a movie featuring some of them! “Rise of the Beasts”, please do not disappoint us!

This show gets a 5/5: Yeeeessss Wars!

Peace!
