My Review of Truth or Square—SpongeBob SquarePants season 6 episode 23 · 11:31pm Mar 26th, 2023

Special Rating Scale:
: Awesome!
: Great!
: Pretty good.
: Meh.
: Overrated and boring.
: Terrible!
: Unnecessary.

Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with another special review for today. This afternoon, I will be reviewing the “Truth or Square” 10th year anniversary special for SpongeBob SquarePants. I remember watching this episode back when it first aired in 2009 on tv. I thought it was pretty entertaining at the time. So now years later, I decided to re-watch it on Paramount+ a couple months ago to relive the old memories. At that time, it was sort of average and mediocre. Then earlier today, I gave it another watch in preparation for this review. Now to put it simply…it was so boring. Nothing in this special was remarkable or significant whatsoever.

This is about SpongeBob and company now celebrating the eleventy-seventh anniversary of the Krusty Krab. But before they could welcome the customers into the restaurant, the crew find themselves locked inside the freezer. They must find a way out of there before the customers leave. Meanwhile, Patchy the Pirate tries to bring in random celebrities to attend his SpongeBob SquarePants fan club to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the series.

First of all, I am gonna talk about the live-action segment of the episode. I get that Patchy always hosts the specials of this show, but this one felt so distracting in contrast to the others. It is nothing more than a random “in your face” SpongeBob-loving celebrity porn just to lengthen the time of the episode. Yes, both segments of the plot cover all the characters celebrating something in recognition of the show in a meta/subtle way, but it is excruciatingly boring to watch.

It was kinda cool to see those celebrity cameos like the late Robin Williams, Will Ferrell, and LeBron James, but come on, it was really annoying to see Patchy bother all those people who have lives of their own. Not to mention that the acting was kinda subpar.

As for the main plot of the special, it wasn’t anything unique either. In fact, this is something you would expect from a normal SpongeBob episode if you were to cut out the unnecessary flashbacks. SpongeBob does something clumsy which causes the problem of the episode, and the problem is easily resolved towards the end while throwing in some Squidward torture slapstick here and there.

Additionally, Plankton didn’t even need to be in this episode. He barely has any adequate screen time, he does little to nothing for the plot, and he predictably loses again to Mr. Krabs. Why is he in this? Looking back at this, Plankton had no significant impact on this episode. This is probably the only episode in the series in which Plankton isn’t done any justice at all.

Lastly, the conflict would have never existed if Mr. Krabs just simply made all the decorations himself right before the breaking of dawn. Why make all these customers wait for so long to get inside the Krusty Krab? It’s no wonder why they left later on. This would have been resolved if all the characters stopped acting like immature idiots and started caring about the customers. Why do these writers have to make Krabs so unlikable?

That’s all I have to say about this boring piece of trash. It’s a 10th anniversary special that could have been watchable if it wasn’t so insipid and irritating to watch. This gets an : Overrated and boring. Definitely my least favorite SpongeBob special of all time.

And that concludes SpongeBob/Amphibia month. I hope you guys enjoyed these reviews, and I look forward to reviewing the Transformers TV shows for April.

See ya then!

Looking back, one of the biggest things that saddened me regarding the special was that Sandy didn’t have a very big part to play. I mean, you’d think that she’d have a larger role considering this was the show’s 10th anniversary special, but she got the background character treatment instead.
