Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with another movie review for tonight! This evening, I will be reviewing The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water from 2015! In my opinion, this is slightly better than the first movie although the latter is still enjoyable. It has a solid premise, intriguing character arcs, hilarious dialogue, and an overall fun storyline. Plus, the plot had a more interesting turn of events that captivated my attention and had me at the edge of my seat. Despite some flaws it has, it is worth watching every now and then.

This movie reintroduces to us SpongeBob’s newest adventure: finding the Krabby Patty Secret Formula! The formula has been stolen…and it wasn’t Plankton this time! Without it, the entire town of Bikini Bottom undergoes an apocalypse where there are no more Krabby Patties. SpongeBob tries to work with Plankton to find the formula until they all eventually find themselves out of the ocean—where they encounter a new foe who seeks for nothing more than to start his own business with the formula.

Yeah, because the creators couldn’t think of anything else to start off the film, the plot centers around the secret formula and where to find it. Furthermore, it was magically taken by our new villain named Burger Beard, played by Antonio Banderas. Honestly, he was really entertaining as an antagonist, but he really needed a more solid motivation than to merely…well, steal the formula and start his own business of making Krabby Patties.

From what I discovered, there is a deleted scene of his backstory that sort of explained why he did what he did. They really should have kept that so that he would be more fleshed-out as a villain. Other than that, he was pretty good. Props to Antonio for his solid performance.

Moving on from that, I liked how they wrote Plankton as some sort of anti-hero as he helped our main characters battle against Burger Beard. Mr. Lawrence never fails to bring out the best of Plankton in this franchise. Although I find it weird that he didn’t take the opportunity to steal the formula himself after their common foe was defeated, considering that he went back to attempting to steal it again during the ongoing series and ultimately in the first film if we keep the chronological series of events in mind. Perhaps it was his way of saying, “Not today…but next time,”?

Now, when it comes to the computer animation of the third act thereof…it looks bland. Sorry, but I’m not a fan of this type of computer animation style blending in with live-action. It was better when the first film blended 2D animation with live-action, not like this. Some people may like it, and that’s fine. It’s just not my personal cup of tea.

As far as the other characters are concerned, it was bizarrely hilarious how everyone in Bikini Bottom, including Mr. Krabs, thought it was gonna be the end of the world if there are no more Krabby Patties without the formula. Umm, do they seriously not have food of their own? Do they not have grocery stores, supermarkets, factories, etc? Do they not have food in their own homes to feed themselves with? Why are they acting like The Krusty Krab is the only place in the ocean that has food? It makes no sense to me.

Despite some of these issues, I did enjoy watching the fun entertainment the film provided. The voice acting, the traditional 2D animation, the soundtrack, the theme, and the action were all enjoyable to watch and listen to.

Like I said, it has a slightly better-written premise when it comes to how the story sets up the first act. I mean, yes, it wasn’t original in any way, but at least it directly involved the secret formula unlike how the first film just brushed off the fact that Plankton stole the formula, made Krabby Patties, and we never hear word about it again. That is something I should have addressed in last week’s review but here it is now.

Overall, this is a fun rewatchable SpongeBob movie. I’ll give it a 9/10!

Peace!

That was good

Interesting fact about this movie, really.

Comedian and actor Tim Conway, who frequently voiced Barnacle Boy in the past, voiced one of the seagulls for this movie. This would ultimately prove to be his final performance, because he retired due to health problems and later passed away in 2019.
