Does this chord progression work with what I'm going for?

Dm, Gm, Am, Dm (i, iv, v, i)

I'm trying to figure out how to write great, original, and natural chord progressions for a sad song I'm working on. I'm not saying that this progression is bad, but I'm not sure if it fits with what I'm going for in the song. Can someone help me figure out how to write chord progressions that match the song? Also, do you think the chord progression is bad? If so, why and what can be done to make it better? Is it too dark? Is it too generic?
