The my little pony fandom is pretty much the only fandom where you would meet rocket scientists and Vietnam war survivors. Most fandoms aren't filled with cool people like that, just teenage boys, interesting how that works.

Blogs really flesh out this sites personality, maybe it's that? And the fact that the my little pony fandom has it's own fanfic website really helps a lot for it's growth, whereas most fandoms rely on the bland websites that are just black and white. Nearly no outwards personality.

How much other fandoms could have grown, but a lot of them have not.
