I've been wondering something about how multiverses work.

Think of a multiverse like a fork in the road. You flip a coin, and in one universe it lands one way, in the other universe it lands the other way.

So when was the coin flipped? Take Morty and Jerry for instance. If the universe forked after Morty was born, then both Jerry's were father to the same Morty at a time. If the universe forked before Morty was born, then even if he still comes into being in both universes, one Jerry was never father to that Morty.

Is that why Rick is so callous about hopping universes? Do you think he knows which versions of Beth are his daughter, and which are not? Would the distinction I explained even matter to him? And even if he reconnects with one, there are still countless Beth's that he never came home to. Plus if one rejects him, another will embrace him with open arms, and they might both still be the real her.
