Triangle is a mystery-thriller released in 2009 about a boating outing between six people gone awry after a lightning storm capsizes their boat and leaves them stranded within miles of ocean. However, their "rescue" arrives when an ocean liner passes by their area and they manage to hitchhike aboard. While most of them manage to make themselves comfortable, single mother Jess (played by Melissa George) feels as though they're not alone on the ship, sensing glimpses of some sort of presence aboard.

The rest of them turn down her qualms, but in mere minutes all hell manages to break loose, for reasons I won't dare tread.

By that description and even a few of the posters, the film probably sounds like some sort of run-of-the-mill slasher flick, but in reality, Triangle is a mesmerizing psychological thriller charged with strong performances, immersive atmosphere, and absolutely brilliant storytelling, and the transition to is a fantastic thrill ride.

I'll try not to give away too much of the experience, but the film slowly evolves into layers in arc that are flawless in how they flow into one another, bringing the story to several complex dimensions. Okay, there's probably one or two little details that contradict one another's logic, but it's still so fascinating to watch the way the movie adapts onto itself.

But going back on the imagery, the film itself looks absolutely phenomenal, almost like a cross between Jaws and The Shining. A decent amount of shots are filled in a very simple style with the huge space of the ocean dwarfing anything on screen, while the set design of the ocean liner is filled with both a comforting warmth and a suspicious edge that you can tell there's something around the corner, which is also contributed to some atmospheric sound design that equates to a very surreal, prison-like tone. Plus, a great, fearful performance from Melissa George yanks us straight into the action.

A bit of a short review, but Triangle is just one of those films you have to see to get the best out of. If you can come across the chance to view from beginning to end, you should definitely take advantage.

I nominate Triangle 9 out of 10 Rainbows.
