Due to the lack of Devil May Cry stories, and in acknowledgement and anticipation of DMC5, we’re holding a DEVIL MAY CRY story contest.

Devil May Cry, by and large, has a rich lore and plethora of characters to utilize, and crossing over in some way, shape, or form into the realm of Equestria is not unheard of, even making for interesting tales both series may or may not utilize to their fullest or most intriguing extent.

With that said, the contest (like the club) includes all games and side media in what’s allowed. However, there are some ground rules:

1. No Displacement Stories. Any story that features someone masquerading as a character (like at a Con or Halloween party, or what have you), only to get said character’s powers and abilities for whatever reason, and mysteriously dumped into Equestria is not permitted in the contest. You can still submit to the other folders.

2. No Stories That Have No Relation to Devil May Cry. What we mean by this is the story has to feature characters, monsters, recognizable items, distinct plotlines, settings, or any combination there-of. An extension to this rule is that you CAN write a story in RELATION to what’s featured, but it has to STILL make sure to keep a strong reference and strong sense of Devil May Cry. If the story is about an OC with similar powers and abilities of DMC characters, but has no real relation to them, features no antagonists, objects, plotlines, settings, or characters at all, it does not qualify. You can still submit THOSE into the general folder. Anything in relation to DmC:DmC is included as what is permitted, even though it has nothing to do with the original series storyline in any way, shape, or form.

3. No Porn Stories. Exactly as it says. No porn/sex stories. Romance and “M-rated” stories are still permitted, however.

4. Post A Link To Your Story In THIS Thread. To make a submission, while you must still submit it into the group folders, you must also post the title of the story (with a link to said story), and a short bio.

5. It MUST Be A New Story With At Least 3000 Words In Length. Whether the story is a one shot, a short story with a few chapters, or a long form story with planned multiple chapters, it must be at LEAST 3000 words in length by the time of submission, and to have been released after this thread was posted. No old submissions.

6. You MAY Make A Story About DMC5. As we’re still waiting for the game, information about characters, plots, and significant items are due to change or improve, but I’ll allow stories about what little we currently DO know about the upcoming game, regardless of theorizing and incorrect guesses the story may make on DMC5.

Prizes:

1st Place: A fully shaded drawing of whatever Devil May Cry Character you want.

2nd Place: A full line art drawing of whatever Devil May Cry character you want.

3rd Place: A sketch of whatever Devil May Cry character you want.

This is all I can provide for the time being...

Yes. Characters in FiM replacing characters in DMC (and/or vice versa) is permitted. It still features the characters, settings, etc, etc of DMC in the story. Please, however, you make sure that if a character is replacing another character, that the replacement character still has their original personality intact.

Ex. Rainbow Dash, even if she were to replace Dante, should still be Rainbow Dash by and large. Conversely, Dante instead of Twilight, should still be Dante by and large.

I've been rattling a DMC fic in my head for a while, but I have to ask, does it need to be completed by the time of submission (meaning the story is over)?

No. IF by the time you’ve uploaded the story to the site has at LEAST 3000 words, it will be accepted. It does NOT need to be completed by the time the contest ends.

HOWEVER, with this said, I would ask that you try to complete as much of the story as you can in however many completed chapters that you can, before you submit it to the contest. The more complete it is, the more the judges can be invested in it, which may improve your chances.

So, yeah, minimum requirements is that it has to be new, and to have at least 3000 words.

But remember, quality over quantity. Take your time, and make sure it reads good before you submit, no matter how big or small it is.

I'd apply as soon as I'd figure out what to write about. Dante wants Celestia to send him back home, but there's a twist and he needs to complete some thematic quest first? Nah, too generic. Or maybe one of the Mane 6 arrives in the DMC universe and shenanigans ensue? No, not interesting enough. Temmen-ni-gru in Equestria? That's just stupid. Demons in Equestria? No, Joey already did that.
What would make a good short? It would need to be out of left field but still fitting in an ironic way.

Anything you want, really, as long as it has some connection to Devil May Cry.

What if Fluttershy, being an animal expert, gets interested in Demonology, and decides to summon demons to study and care for... to disastrous results?

Or maybe Twilight, in her infinite wisdom, reads about metaphysics and attempts to open a portal, but the one she made leads to the Underworld, and a string of beasties run free, causing havoc across the land?

There are alot of ideas. Just use your imagination and consider that it doesn’t HAVE to utilize main characters or direct stories of the games. It CAN use them, but even minor characters, enemies, bosses, objects, environments, plotlines, etc are viable if it’s a clear connection to Devil May Cry.
