Make it an Oni mask. It's Japanese, which given how Wolverine is a samurai makes this all the more fitting. I mean the BASIC design could indeed work as this type of mask, as clearly demonstrated by this awesome Wolverine redesign I found!

2021863 Because this was a fan redesign I found. I just think it would have been a good way to incorporate the classic mask design into the movies since how it looks in the comics would indeed look impractical in live action.
