Well, I was talking with Aegis Exemplar in the TCB IRC, and he pondered about this to me.

1) Diamond Dogs could feasibly be argued to come from the north, or at least be widespread across Equestria.

2) Depending on fan interpretation, they eat gems.

3) Show canon established the Crystal Empire is in the north.

I'd envision them as formed of an organic crystal, similar to what Space Godzilla had growing from his body. It's close enough for a Diamond Dog to digest it, but functions in a similar manner to living tissue
