A more in-depth explanation of this post. Basically, this is how the plot would go if it was set in Equestria:
In Farasi, a lion pride is attacked and decimated by poacher ponies, sans one who escapes and attempts to ask the Savanna Council for help. When the Savanna Council (consisting of an elephant, a crocodile, a hippo, and a zebra) does arrive, they cruelly dismiss the lion and regard his plight as a needed casualty. Enraged, the lion denounces the Council for their arrogance before becoming possessed by the Pendant of Mngwa, a purple jewel filled with dark magic that grants him heightened abilities, enabling him to gruesomely kill them. He then vows to eradicate any pony and pony-related creatures from Equestria, starting with wiping them out from Farasi, adopting the name Pony-Killer.
A few months later, Zecora and Daring Do aka A.K. Yearling visit Farasi for different reasons (for Zecora, it's to visit her old village; for Daring Do, it's to search for the Pendant of Mngwa) where they run into each other and get acquainted. At the same time, wildlife biologist Dr. Nix Stereotype and his family, consisting of his wife, Betting Karma, and two teenage daughters, Melody Harmony and Neverfall, arrive at Farasi's Mopony Game Reserve for a vacation. Nix reunites with old friend, Mopony manager, and fellow biologist, Mark-for-Battles, who introduced Nix and Betting to each other years ago. Mark-for-Battles and Betting take Nix and the girls to the village where she grew up. That night, Nix confides to Mark-for-Battles in how the trip is meant to reconnect with his daughters, out of guilt over being distant due to his work. Meanwhile, Zecora and Daring Do develop feelings for each other, culminating in them having sex.
The next day, Zecora and Daring Do meet Mark-for-Battles and the family before they and some other visitors tour the reserve's restricted areas; Zecora and Daring Do tag along since the route the tour is taking matches the paths to their respective destinations. During the tour, Zecora and Daring Do grow to befriend the family and a few of the other tourists. Mark-for-Battles shows them a local lion pride which he helped raise and notices that one is injured. At a nearby zebra community, Mark-for-Battles and Zecora discover most of the population is dead, much to the latter's horror. Deducing a lion is responsible, Mark-for-Battles rushes back to report the finding. Later, Nix encounters an injured zebra (the only survivor of the community slaughter) in the road but is unable to save him. Daring Do accompanies Mark-for-Battles in tracking the lion before the latter is mauled by Pony-Killer, who had been stalking the group since the tour began. Pony-Killer then follows Daring Do back to the group where he ambushes Nix, forcing the two ponies to take cover in the carriage along with the other tourists. Melody and Neverfall take control of the carriage and attempt to speed away, but crash into a tree near a rocky cliff, stranding them.
Mark-for-Battles radios Nix on a walkie talkie, warning him to stay away, saying Pony-Killer is using Mark-for-Battles as bait to lure the others out (a trick the lion picked up from his years of stalking poachers). As the radio is out of range to contact help, along with the unicorn tourists lacking knowledge of an S.O.S. spell, Daring Do helps Nix assemble a tranquilizer rifle. They confront the lion, hoping to subdue him long enough to recover Mark-for-Battles and trek back to civilization. Pony-Killer attacks and Melody and Betting take advantage of the distraction to save Mark-for-Battles; Daring Do notices the Pendant of Mngwa on Pony-Killer's forehead during the attack. Neverfall stabs the lion with three tranquilizer darts in after he knocks the gun from Nix’s hooves, causing Pony-Killer to retreat. Melody and Betting bring Mark-for-Battles back to the carriage where Zecora and a unicorn tourist treat his wound.
As night falls, the now-recovering Mark-for-Battles wonders why Pony-Killer went rogue, with Daring Do speculating that the pendant she was looking for is the same one on the lion's forehead and how it corrupted his already-fractured mental state in addition to enhancing his lion abilities. Zecora shares her worries about her village being targeted Soon after, the same poacher ponies that killed Pony-Killer's pride months earlier arrive and initially agree to transport the group to Betting's village, until they spot Mark-for-Battles, an avid anti-poacher, inside the carriage and decide to kill the stallions while enslaving the mares into prostitution instead. However, Pony-Killer attacks and scatters the poachers, killing them one by one. Nix, Zecora, and Daring Do maneuver their way past the lion and finds the poachers' poaching vehicle keys. Back at the carriage, one of the tourists, a racist Earth pony, attempts to abandon the rest of the group to their fates, only for Pony-Killer to swiftly kill him. Mark-for-Battles holds the lion off long enough to allow the others to escape, though Melody sustains a deep laceration to her side. The carriage falls into a ravine and Mark-for-Battles sacrifices himself by setting off an explosion, severely burning Pony-Killer. Nix starts the poaching vehicle (with some help from Daring Do) and races away with his family and the tourists.
At an abandoned schoolhouse, Zecora helps treat Melody's wound, then assists Nix and Daring Do in foraging for water and medicinal ingredients. Pony-Killer appears and stalks the group before the trio return. Having anticipated this, Pony-Killer reveals he can speak Ponish and recounts how watching his pride killed before his eyes made him realize that the world will continue to manipulate the laws of nature until all ponies have been put in their place. Though sympathetic of his tragedy, Nix, Betting, Zecora, and Daring Do unsuccessfully try to get Pony-Killer to relinquish both the pendant and his genocidal ambitions. Locking his family and the other survivors inside a room, Nix promises to return after subduing Pony-Killer, with Zecora and Daring Do making similar promises to each other and professing their love. Zecora, Daring Do and Nix lure Pony-Killer into an opening and engage him, where their battle attracts the attention of Mark-for-Battles' lion pride. As Pony-Killer is about to kill Nix, the pride patriarchs and matriarchs intervene and Daring Do uses the opportunity to remove the pendant from his forehead, allowing them to finally kill the rogue lion. A Mopony worker arrives and saves Nix as he falls unconscious.
Awakening in a hospital, a recovering Nix tells his wife and daughters he loves them while Zecora and Daring Do do the same thing with each other. Sometime later, the four return to the preserve, this time as a united family. Meanwhile, Zecora introduces Daring Do to her village and vice-versa while Daring Do writes a new book based on the incident, along with sending the Pendant of Mngwa off to Princess Twilight Sparkle to ensure nopony will be corrupted by its power.
