1/10: Mayday! Mayday! The season is rotting away!

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! This is yours truly back with another tv show season review for today! This morning, I will be reviewing the second season of The Batman! Now this is my favorite season out of the five because of these reasons: one, Joker has more appearances therein; two, it re-introduces two of my favorite Batman villains of all time; and three, it has more plot-driven episodes that just seem very interesting and more exciting than how the first season carried its episodes. I love it when a second season of a series manages to pick up where the first season left off and manages to be just as well-written, if not better.

In this season, we see Detective Yin secretly working with the Batman to solve mysteries and to help him fight crime despite the police force still going against him. After the way Batman helped her stop Clayface in the previous finale, she saw Batman in a different light and realized the good he was trying to do even if she didn’t entirely agree with his methods. Still, it was awesome seeing their partnership and dynamic. She was basically Jim Gordon to Batman before the actual Jim Gordon entered the chat at the end.

But if there was one thing I hated about this show, it was that right after this season....she just dropped out. Like, she is never seen again and is barely even mentioned by Batman or Gordon (except for just one time in season 4 episode 7). Why did the writers take her out? Was she not that important anymore? Was her story finished? Was her character arch completed? What happened to her?!

Anyway, one other thing I loved about this season was the temporary villain interactions and team-ups like we’ve seen with Freeze and Firefly, Catwoman with Penguin, and Riddler fighting Joker and Penguin to get to Batman. Speaking of which,

This is one of my favorite iterations of The Riddler in animation! I loved his voice, his design, his staff, and how he utilized his riddles in the two episodes he appeared in: “Riddled” and “Night and the City”. Robert Englund was amazing in the Riddler role, and he nailed his sexy voice perfectly. If I wanted to, I would date this version of the character with no hesitation. He may be skinny, but his voice is hot. Now, I’m not gonna comment on his backstory yet because that doesn’t happen until season 4, so I’ll talk about it then.

As I’ve said before, Killer Croc was a beast in this show. No pun intended. In his debut episode “Swamped”, we see how intelligent, strong, and cunning he is. He shows his goons who’s boss, nearly destroys Batman, floods the whole city, and came close to accomplishing his goals. Unlike his Animated Series counterpart, this version of the character looks like an actual crocodile and growls like one. It’s cool that he doesn’t have a clear backstory or actual origin in regards to how he became a humanoid crocodile in the first place because that builds to the mystery of the character and making him more of an irredeemable threat that has to be stopped. It sucks he only had four appearances in the show. Nonetheless, Ron Perlman killed it during the role. Pun intended.

As for Spellbinder, I can’t say too much about him because he’s not much of a character in this series unlike his portrayal in Batman Beyond. He is never seen again after “The Butler Did It” aside from his non-speaking cameo in “Rumors” in season 4. That’s it.

In conclusion, this season is an overall masterpiece that brings out the best of Batman’s best villains, the hero himself, and had some of the best plot-driven episodes with awesome action scenes, great voice acting, solid animation, and splendid choreography. This season gets a 10/10! Sadly, the next seasons took a slight decline in quality, but I’ll get to that soon.

Peace!
