Should 'Road to El Dorado' get a Sequel or a Reboot? · 9:31am Nov 22nd, 2021

I recently rewatched 'Road to El Dorado' and watched an analysis video of it, and it got me curious on one topic that 'Road to El Dorado' was originally planned to be a franchise but was dropped due to it being a box office bomb. So my question is this, with the movie now having a cult following with critics now praising the movie, should it get a revival in some way. Like, should it be a true sequel where it picks up after the first movie, or a full on reboot where Tulio and Miguel are still the primary characters but set in a similar but different story?

If it goes the sequel path, than the movie would have to start off with a new story for the trio but in a effort not to alienate potential new addiance, it would have to be similar to the first to still have the feel. Like the trio could find another South American civilization where two tribes having a fued so they try to bring peace between the tribes... but also trying to profit from them as well. Another idea is that they travel back to Spain and instead of two tribes, its two towns/cities fueding, and have scenarios having Chel embrasing Spanish culture, similar to 'Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World' (but better).

Through if it goes to reboot path, than the movie would again have a new story but similar to the original and it would connect better to potential new addiance since its a fresh new start. Like it could start out the same as with the original with Tulio and Miguel escaping Spain but the instead end up in a brand new location outside of South America, they could instead be adrift at sea until being sucked into a whirlpool which leads them under the sea floor where it leads them to the lost city of Atlantis and like in the original they are once again mistaken as gods by the Atlantians with the exception of Chel.

Which do you think is the best option?

It's been over 21 years since it was released, so a 'true' sequel is just out of the question right now
A reboot/remake could work, but much of the... for lack of a better term... magic of the film is that it is mostly traditional 2D, and DreamWorks, like other large American animation companies, have a 3D fetish, so reboot is not really re-welcomed.

I say first do a major re-lease and after the film is in the mass mind set, then you call follow up.
The question, how? Where do you do in the Americas in the 1500's? The Fountain of Youth being in the America a English anti-Spanish propaganda about how Juan Ponce de Leon had a hard time trying to conquer Florida. And most of the other possible place are extremely obscure, and the distance between those places and the only means of travel being by horse or foot... it's just not as credible as the Bring Crosby and Bob Hope 'Road To...' series that this film is based on. So really The Road To El Dorado is best as a stand alone

Well, another option that I just remembered is that Dreamworks could instead have a sequel be a series on Netflix. It would be less risking than a theatrical release and you can get to tell potencial stories without being limited by the time length of a movie. Your Fountain of Youth idea could work in a series, the three discovered a temple with a map to the FoY (but instead of wanting to drink, they instead think to sell the water to make a fortune) and so set off to there journey by crossing the Carribean sea where they might have to encounter/escape from pirates or Spanish ships, reach Florida but now have to out smart Juan Ponce de Leon's forces to reach the fabled fountain. I think that could all fit in a 10 episode arc.

maybe, but if where a true series, where else would they go?
