My little Pony New generations Movie thoughts and speculations (Spoiler warning)

Well I have now watched the my little pony new generations movie. It left me thinking and I felt compelled to write those thoughts down to clear my head, this just seemed like a something to do with the end result.

Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen the flick yet.

I have to admit it was nice to have a tie in to the “friendship is magic” generation, that was probably marketing deciding it would be a good way to draw in old fans and try to build on the previous success of course but I can roll with it. It should also be interesting, and I know its likely a hook to make fans watch, to see what if any other links to the previous incarnation we may see in the future as this moves into an actual series.

The only issues I have with that tie in to the old show as “ancient Equestria” are as follows and I think some other fans may see things the same way.

1) Given that the tribes have separated again, it sort of means that Twilight or whomever she may have at some point picked to succeed her dropped the proverbial ball, something some fans may find hard to swallow. Granted we have neither details on what caused the three tribes to separate, when it occurred or who was in charge at the time, another interesting hole they have created to potentially fill.

2) Given the longevity of alicorns I have to wonder if the show will have a case of any of the previous generations alicorns still being around to meet the new cast, or if we might encounter descendants of the element bearers if the new cast don’t turn out to be said descendants. (though I believe only Pinkie had confirmed direct descendants)

3) On the same note I wonder if we might see tombs or monuments to the old bearers that may have stood the test of time somewhere.

4) We have no idea where these three towns are in relation to the central locations of the previous generation like Cantelot, Ponyville or Manehattan etc. (unless old locations due to revision history were just renamed) Personally I don’t know if it would be interesting or lazy writing for any of these locations to be visited in future as ruins similar to how the castle of the two sisters was used in the past. We know it’s a possibility as the Pegasus town already established places from before the separation of tribes exist there. Given how much knowledge of magic and other aspects have been lost I could see a search for such places or libraries could be a future focus, Sunny’s dad had to be getting his data from somewhere after all. Though given the impression for the crystals in the lighthouse it could be they might find something interesting in the rubble.

5) On the same note we could be in for the rediscovery of the Crystal ponies again, I wonder if Flurry would be the on throne.

6) Given that the friendship is magic series is considered ancient equestrian to this new generation crowd, it does raise the sort of major question of where the heck did these three crystals that are tied to all pony magic suddenly came from. I can see two possibilities if they make any attempt to fill this lore hole. A) artifact was always present, but hidden maybe found by Darin Doo in ancient temple B) forged for some reason after events of G4 series, maybe from either the tree of harmony or Twilight as a friendship symbol that failed to work or a safeguard against the three tribes fighting each other, strips them of magic so as to reduce damage or prevent wendigo resurgence

7) There is also the question with no magic and no alicorns apparently around if this is the same universe as the previous series, who has been dealing with sun and moon rotation. Easiest solution is probably a more advanced version of the artifact Twilight was given perhaps from when the two sisters went on vacation. Which opens the avenue for ruins explorations to wind something like that up again to keep it running.

Then there are just my general thoughts on where things could go, world building and character backstory points to potentially fill going forward. I fully admit most if not all of this was probably not touched due to pacing and movie length, I am just putting these forth as my thoughts on what could come from later story writing.

8) I am interested in perhaps learning more of how the three tribes have been governing themselves. We only really get a clear view on the Pegasus village with them having a royal family, though for the earth ponies it almost seems like the position of sheriff also doubles as mayor or generally pony in charge. We don’t get any clear idea of who may actually be officially in charge of the unicorns in my opinion.

9) The fact that we saw no pictures of Sunny’s mother could be to save on building a model, but I can also see this as something the writers could spin on her mother either being alive or not an earth pony. Given that Maretime Bay is on the sea I could see her mother being a sea pony. A bit of a aquaman type theory but I feel the need to lay it out.

10) Could be interesting to see whether a series will fill in where or whether some characters have living parents or if we will have another Applejack situation where they are simply gone sans detailed explanation.

11) On a more light hearted note with Hitches animal magnetism I spent a good part of the movie thinking of him as Flutterguy

12) I have to admit to thinking that Sprout got off easy in the ending, I mean I expected him to end up in a cell at the very least on the grounds of the destruction of private property if nothing else

13) In many ways this could be a bit of a turn back to the G1 sort of concept, the main cast exploring out from the three towns to encounter other isolated pony communities. Or they may just keep things for a few seasons to settling things between the three tribes.

14) I am predicting the potential establishment of a fourth settlement where all three tribes come together. Keeping separated into three different towns does not easily build up the three tribes coming together so much. The question of whether it will be voluntary or if the something will come along to destroy the other three towns will have to wait to be seen. At the very least I can see the ruins in Zephyr Heights being brought back into service quickly to establish a transit system between the three towns. Though it also raises the question of where ruins in Maretime Bay may be hiding.

15) With all of the repeats of Twilights cutie mark I am expecting some sort of hunt for her or something of hers at some point. Perhaps history will reveal things went south after she vanished or something, though I wouldn't be surprised if she's found locked in a library or something. Though her withdrawing or losing her way following the other element bearer's or a succession of friends passing away could also work. Though personally I have a soft spot where they run into some old mare recluse similar to Zecora that they keep coming back to for advice or wisdom where the viewers know its Twilight but the cast doesn't. I think it would be a nice lead up for a reveal.

16) I am figuring 50/50 odds on Sunny's alicorn transformation being temporary based on the etherical look of the wings and horn. It could be it will be used similar to the Equestria girls transformation, a temporary power up. Not that I have anything against Sunny as an alicorn but it just seems a little quick to be dropping that in as well. I think that Sunny was clearly the leader of the group without having to add that to cement it. If that was the intention.

18) It seems as though Earth ponies have no concept that they have Magic like the other two tribes at all. Possibly because for them its more subtle so its loss may not have been as badly felt. I really thought the unicorns were shown to have fallen the most due to this. I expect at least one zany episode of the earth ponies finding the effects of their own magic being restored, possibly after a bit of feeling like they got the short end of the stick over the magic returning bit.

19) looking forward to seeing what they do with the restored Crystal, they have to keep it somewhere after all where that could be a argument point. all three tribes have equal claim to it after all, and if it needs to be guarded if it becomes something enemies or malcontents may target it the question of how they do that comes up. Its not really an element that can be worn after all, its more like the Triforce from Zelda in a sense an artifact that combines three powers. Plus it sent out that very clear signal of 'here I am something special come get me"

Though part of me thinks of the whole start point premise of this of the lost magic and the three tribes separate as almost a scenario as if the villains plot in the final season of Friendship is magic had managed to succeed almost, just lacking the three of them ruling. I mean they were fostering distrust and were planning to drain magic from ponies, and here is an Equestria with the three tribes separate and no magic. Feels a little like a plot recycle job to me.

Still overall it was a good movie in my opinion, and an interesting starting point for a new series. Whether they squander this good beginning or build properly on it we will all have to wait and see.
