My little pony a new generation: review · 9:01pm Sep 26th, 2021

Unicorns. Earth ponies. Pegasi. Long ago, the three species lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the earth ponies attacked. Only Twilight and her friends, the bearers of the elements of harmony, could defeat them, but when the world needed them most, they vanished. A hundred years passed and I discovered a group of special ponies belonging to different species. And although our friendship is great, we still have a lot to learn before we´re ready to save anypony. But I believe we can save the word.

(Ok, sorry for this dumb intro).

Huzzah everypony this is Dianabel! So yesterday for lunch I dived into Netflix to make sure if the new MLP movie was available and it turned it was! So I decided to give it a watch. This movie left me so many thoughts in my mind and I wanted to share them with all of you. But before that, if you haven´t watched the movie, I advise you not to read this until you´ve watched it. This review will be full of spoilers. Otherwise, enjoy my review!

So the movie is about Sunny Starscout, an optimistic earth pony who believes ponies can be united once again, after being separated for so many years (again). Her life turns around when an unicorn named Izzy Moonbow enters Maretime Bay, her city. They, along Sunny´s friend, Hitch Trailblazer, an earth pony sheriff, and two pegasi princesses, Zipp and Pipp, go into a mission to unite the pony species onge again.

To be honest, I wasn´t really excited about this movie. Maybe because I´m very attached to G4 that I think that nothing could ever top it. However, I was still curious to see how it was. The movie was better than I expected, in fact, I really enjoyed it! However, I don´t think it´s as great as many MLP fans make it seem. Let´s see both the positive points and the negative points of this movie to understand better my point of view:

The positive

-The message about propaganda: a really important message nowadays, since we´re starting to question what they taught us in history and what they didn´t tell us. Propaganda it´s well explained for kids in a non violent way but still warning us about how damaging it can be for vulnerable people. I specially liked Sunny´s father ´s line: not brainwashing, research.

-The music: the soundtrack was gorgeous and the songs had me dancing. I can´t choose which one is my favourite, they´re all so great!

-The characters: the main characters are very lovable. My favourites would be Sunny and Izzy. Their scenes are really adorable, specially when Izzy reveals why she came to Maretime Bay. I also loved Zipp, she was really nice and I loved how she revelled against her mother´s lies. Secondary characters, like Sunny´s dad or Alphabittle were also great. My least favourite characters are Sprout and his mother, I´ll dive deeper into that in the negative points.

-The backgrounds: gorgeous and full of color. I think my favourite would be Bridlewood, since it´s the most fantasy like one.

-The humour: there were scenes that got a chuckle out of me, I won´t lie.

-When watching the credits, it made me so happy seeing that so many hispanic people worked in this project, so I´ll add this as a plus.

The negative:

-The plot: don´t get me wrong, it´s not that I´m against stories about unity, (The final challenge and Gusty the Great are basically about that!), but it feels so weird to see this plot happening in the same universe as the mane 6´s. It´s painful to see that all their work was for nothing. I think ponies should know by this point that is better to be together and not discriminate against each other or other species. But coming back to the plot, I think that the crystals thing could have been handled better. It´s just I found unbelieveable that none of the characters neither Sunny or Hitch who are EARTH PONIES thought about the existence of the earth pony crystal until the end of the movie. This had me yelling at the screen, actually. There´s also so many incognites about the past, which brings me to my next point.

-The lack of lore: one of the many things that made G4 so special was its rich lore. From episode 1 we get pieces of Equestria´s history, even though it´s a few and simple story, but still explains how we got to the begining of the story and leaves so much room for many stories. In this movie there´s none of that. Yes, we get the crystals of the three species, but they don´t tell us why they were invented or when they were invented. Neither they tell us what had happened for the three ponies species to be separated again. We only know that the earth ponies defeated the unicorns, according to what Sprout said when he was a colt. I know the movie is to introduce the characters and I´m sure they´ll explain in this series, but I don´t see how. I don´t see much potential for adventure here as G4 had.

-The lack of fantasy: I guess they modernized Equestria to fit our world, but I don´t really agree with that decision. The fantasy setting is key to any MLP generation, it´s its root. Without the fantasy, I felt like I was watching another nowadays kid´s movie and not MLP.

-The villain: I think this is the weakest point in the movie. Sprout was a really weak villain in my opinion. He was just another current kid´s movie´s villain instead of a MLP villain. Yes, he used fear and propaganda to get power but it was done in a way that just felt so... childish. Cozy Glow did a better job because she was more serious and more calculating. And don´t give me the excuse of the children. FIM was for children and they showed Nightmare Moon attempting to kill Celestia, Tirek and Twilight´s epic fight, Sombra dissentagrating twice, need I to say more? Sprout was a spoilt child trying to be a dictator. And the obvious references to nazis were so out of place (fun fact, I even noticed an European Union flag in the resgistration of the machine at the end of the movie! As an european, that made me a bit uncomfortable). It´s not that I´m against making references to dictators when it comes to villains, look at Starlight for example! Sprout wasn´t menacing enough to be compared to a dictator. Plus, his motivation and change of mindset were too quick. And the fact that he doesn´t get any punishment in the end....

But despite this problems, I still enjoyed the movie and had fun and that´s the important thing. I just see that many MLP fans absolutely loved this movie and while I liked it, I don´t think it´s that great. My final rating would be 7/10.

And those are my thoughts on the movie! What about you guys? Did you like the movie or not and why? Let me know in comments!

It´s painful to see that all their work was for nothing. I think ponies should know by this point that is better to be together and not discriminate against each other or other species.

I don't think it was for nothing. Because the reality is that chaos will always run rampant in the world despite the amount of work done by a certain number of people in a previous time. As long as there was someone like Sunny who stood for harmony, Twilight's work will still live on. Plus, so many years have gone by, and we have no idea who or what caused the disunity in the first place. Hopefully in the upcoming show, we will get an answer to that.

Haa... that profile, how not to comment on the joker in 'old' format.

The film is acceptable and the rating seems correct to me.
The only thing I regret is that the direction the series took... is not bad. But I think it is not the same, it does not feel like it is a continuity.
