Gorr the God Butcher · 10:30pm Aug 10th, 2021

Greetings, buddies! Hope you all are doing well today!

It has been almost forever since I’ve posted blogs about villains and what I think of them. But lately, I have been rather curious about one of Thor’s most deadliest villains in light of the upcoming 2022 film Thor: Love and Thunder. His name is Gorr the God Butcher.

Now, I have never heard of the character until they announced that they will be making a fourth Thor film and that Gorr will be the main antagonist in the movie. I was rather interested in learning about him since he appears to have a rather intriguing design with a menacing name and title. So just today, I’ve read a couple of articles that explained his past, development, and how he became what most Marvel fans know him as. To be candid... it really both surprised and saddened me to learn of his backstory.

Gorr is an alien from an unnamed planet and born of parents who died around his earlier age. He was even raised up to revere the gods his parents adored so much. However, despite all the positive things his family said of them, every time he went through harsh times (like the day his pregnant wife Arra perished in an earthquake and children dying from starvation), none of the gods would answer his prayers or heed his cries. He had to grow up all alone and fend for himself after his parents’ deaths. It’s like... I feel terribly sorry for him.

After all the suffering he went through, he stopped believing in every god and in their existence for not answering his prayers. It wasn’t until something happened to the old dude that changed his life forever. Look at this:

While walking alone through the deserts, a pair of armored beings hurtle across the sky and land in an explosion on the ground nearby. Gorr approaches these unknown beings to find the gilded one had stabbed the inky black opponent. When the gold god asks for help, Gorr refuses, viewing the beings as gods and thus blaming them for his suffering. Just then, an ooze-like substance shot up into Gorr’s hand from the blade of the black-armored god and formed into a spearhead, as if forged into volcanic glass. With it, he butchered the remaining god. With a mere thought, the spearhead turned once again into ooze, covering Gorr's body in armor with wings. As he flew away from his planet and into outer space, he wondered if there were more gods out there to find.

This ooze-like substance is called the All-Black, an ancient symbiote that grants the user superhuman strength, virtual immortality, and increased durability. It originated from the evil Knull which bonded with Gorr after the former was incapacitated in battle. Thus, Gorr has become the infamous God Butcher as he began to butcher and kill thousands of gods across the cosmos. The movie is not even out yet, and he is now already become one of my favorite villains! I love his origin story, his development as a villain, and his overall character. Hopefully, the movie will make me like him more.

Speaking of which, now that I am familiar with the character and how he became a super-villain, here are some of my expectations for Christian Bale’s portrayal of Gorr:

1). Make him a real threat as portrayed in the comics and someone who will pose as an actual challenge to Thor.

2). Make sure he has a personality that highlights his evil nature, and emotional characteristics, thereby making him three-dimensional. Don’t forget his backstory too.

3). That Christian Bale will give a proper, intimidating voice for Gorr unlike... “WHERE’S THE TRIGGER?!? WHERE IS IT?!!!?” Don’t ruin scenes with out-of-place humor that are supposed to be serious.

4). That his lines of dialogue are meaningful and not generic.

That’s all, guys. Any thoughts about Gorr? I mean, man, a simple backstory and character design like that just won me over.

Peace!
