Hello there! Here is my review of Kung Fu Panda 3! Like I said from my previous review, this third installment of the series is my least favorite out of the trilogy; however, that does not mean that I hate or dislike this movie. This was also a great film and a wonderful conclusion of the trilogy. The first one was just fantastic and amazing whereas the second movie was the absolute best of them all. This is just a great movie with only a few issues I have with it. So let’s talk about them, shall we?

I want to talk about the main villain first. Don’t get me wrong, I actually like this guy. In fact, he was definitely awesome! Kai is one of those villains who are so powerful with either magic-draining powers or energy-draining abilities. He somewhat reminds me of Lord Tirek from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. They are both massive in brute strength and have their own unique ways of absorbing energy or power from their adversaries. Plus, he also reminds me of Bane from the Batman franchise (DC Universe). It’s very hard to decide which of the three would prevail because they are equal in brute force and size (although Tirek would be a lot bigger depending how much magic he absorbed).

Anyway, Kai was really menacing in this as he was likewise a force to be reckoned with. Like Lord Shen, he also was unintentionally funny at times like when he had his interaction with Po in the climax. “Chitchat! Chattery! Chit! Chat!” I love that part! Honestly, if J.K. Simmons gave such a powerful voice performance as Kai, imagine if his character—J. Jonah Jameson—would play a Spider-Man villain.

Despite how awesome he is, I find his background with Oogway a bit questionable. Why exactly was he thirsting for power? What exactly snapped in his mind that caused him to turn evil? I know, he was more concerned for absorbing chi and despising the kindness of his “brother” during the years in which they’ve been together prior to their experience in the spirit realm. They never fully explained his motives that concisely, neither did they bother in making him a complex character like how Tai Lung and Shen were. What do you guys think on that?

Is it just me, or does every villain have a color theme accompany them? Tai Lung has a blue theme, Shen has a red theme, and Kai has a green theme here. It’s very similar to how Christopher Nolan made his themes in The Dark Knight Trilogy.

While the character development was very emotional and well written, the movie never picked up the subplot of Po’s and Tigress’ friendship together as if it never happened. Still, I’m happy with what we got. The voice acting was spot on, the animation was beautiful as usual, and the soundtrack was great. It was really awesome seeing Po reunite with his Panda family again... especially with his surviving father after all these years. Their interactions with Po were really adorable and funny. It was genuinely enjoyable. So this story was really well done and has clever writing therein. Overall, this was an epic and powerful conclusion to the trilogy. It taught lessons about inner peace, courage, wisdom, true strength, unity of family, and the perseverance during hard times. Thus, it gets a 9/10. Awesome trilogy to this day.

Peace!

I believe that both Oogway and Kai were warlords trying to conquer China together, but when Oogway started to fall from darkness, Kai blamed the pandas for supposedly taking away the only family he had and became obsessed with power so that he wouldn't feel hurt again.

Interesting. I’m starting to believe that myself. 🤔
