Scarlet Witch (who got her powers from an Infinity Stone) overpowers Thanos and comes so close to killing him, he has to bombard the battlefield just to catch a breather?
"OMG HOLY SHIT SHE'S SO BADASS I LOVE HER AAAAAAH!" 
Captain Marvel (who also got her powers from an Infinity Stone) overpowers Thanos and comes so close to killing him, he has to think quickly and punch her away with the Power Stone?
"Ugh, so lame and overpowered, Captain Marvel ruins everything."

In any media, two characters can do basically the same thing but if people are more emotionally invested in one more than the other, the fans reaction will reflect that. Captain Marvel needed more than 1 bad movie for fans to hook on to her character.
Just like Sunset Shimmer. When EQgirls first came out I didn't like the movie and I didn't like Sunset. Who's this bint trying to hang with our well established characters?? Now though, Sunset Shimmer is one of the best. Captain Marvel tried coming in at the end of an 11 year build up. She just didn't have enough screen time.

It was mediocre which isn’t good by marvel standards. If you thought the movie was grate more power to ya but to most people Caption Marvel was one of the worst the MCU had to offer. Especially since it had the misfortune to be right after Infinity war and right before end game.
Also I was happy Thanos puncher her pet with the power gem. Captain Marvel was a bitch both in the movies and in the comics

One of my friends was complaining to me about the scene with the female heroes all fighting together, saying it was too "unsubtle". I said to her, "You're talking about a superhero movie where the Avengers are fighting a big purple alien who wants to use six magic stones to remake the universe. 'Subtlety' went out the window a LONG time ago."

Now that was a cool shot. One that said "The MCU's first female superhero Black Widow may be gone but there are plenty of awesome girl heroes to carry on her legacy."
