I think my Great Grandfather passed when I was 4 or 5 years old. That would be 1984 or 1985.
As for WW2, yes my grandfather served there. Interesting story with that. My dad told me he had finished his tour of service a month before the attack at Pearl Harbor. Soon as they happen he reenlisted. He didn't have too, his service was over. Yet he felt it was his duty to do so. He was stationed in the Pacific too.
I once asked him when I was little kid what it was like over there...he got very quite and told me I was to young to know that. I never asked him again.
