Why I cancelled Zzombieponiezz and why it didn't work. · 9:02pm Oct 16th, 2012
Thanks for the critique guys and you're all completely right. I think the problem is, my strength is in quick, back and fourth writing and in a story that's supposed to be horror, this technique doesn't work. When working with comedy, or slice of life stories that reflect the nature of the show, this quick snappy pacing works. To execute proper horror you need a moment to build tension, otherwise there's just a bunch of gory visuals with no emotional impact. I've written a lot of stories before (even some horror) and I think the reason this was directed so poorly is that I've never done horror with characters per se. In high school I got very high praise for a story about a man with a severe fear of insects being locked inside his apartment while roaches poor in. I'm good with description and the use of unsettling details but this was just one man. Trying to work in many characters (especially ones with different dynamic personalities like MLP) without evaluating how to make this concept work (a bunch of gross disturbing images) results in kind of a mess.
I won't work with horror again untill I can be sure of a direction that will be effective with this sort of setting, and won't devolve into a "Here's monsters, kill them" formula.
My next thing will be more faithful to the tone of the show and keep me in a genre I am more familiar and comfortable with.
