    A quick Slamjam postmortem note

So, the creator of one of the OCs I wrote about just about flipped his lid at me because I gave his character a gay shipping story, ruining his message of platonic bromance and emotionally vulnerable heterosexual dudes.

    Part 1: Poetry

“But I hate poetry” well that’s because you’re doing it wrong. A poem of the type that we were told to write in this class is just a short, condensed piece of work that shows who you are and what you do as a writer.

Lesson 0: Learn the rules before you break them

I know full well that I'm talking down to a lot of people in this post--my excuse is that writing it out is also a way for me to refresh the lessons in my own mind. Story tags are because I plan to go back and "grade myself" based on my own advice as i write these.

    All is right in ponydom

    I know, I said I would do a thing, and then I didn't.

I will. I promise. Next post.

But first, I need to share this with you: a friend has informed me that One Terrible Writer has posted all of his stories, previously thought to be lost forever, on fanfiction.net.

Knighty HATES him! Honolulu-area baker reveals how to improve your writing with 3 simple rules!

I’ve seen it a few times, and you probably have too: people will say stuff along the lines of “I bet this person took a community college course in creative writing and now they think they're so great.” It’s a very resonant insult for classists like me. Besides, it’s rooted in fact: the level of literacy needed to pass community college courses in this town is miserably low.

... did Long Live the Queen get handed straight through to EQD on the first try...

... and Starswirl Walked Through Time get handed back with a "this is actually good, I bet it could be great, so good luck!"

... when The Ancient Heart's First Beating got majorly hated on?

This is a bunch of bullshit. The PR comments are useless and the reason for rejection is basically "both PRs who saw this weren't interested in the content, so your execution should've grabbed us, and it didn't." That's basically "You don't have the guts to make this work, come back when you've evolved as a writer."

I'm not MAD per se, it's just that I'm arrogant enough to think that they're wrong.

Trust me, if it wasnt the exposure that getting your story on EQD gives, no one would bother submitting. The pre-readers are pretty judgmental and biased about what they approve and what they crap on. If they dont like the topic, it gets turned down. If they dont like your wording, it gets turned down. If they dont think you're confident enough of a writer, it gets turned down. Then some random as hell story that just happens to make one of them giggle gets by and it's suddenly plastered with views just because it was on EQD.

To be honest, I'd rather EQD not spotlight stories, and leave that to FiMFic.

...but how many Twilight Sparkle Verbs the Noun 1000-word fics can you stand? :applejackconfused:

:rainbowlaugh:

EqD is the wall to throw stuff at. Don't get too caught up in trying to please them, especially if it seems to be corrupting your muse. No Good Can Come Of That :ajbemused:

Wish I could tell ya WTF is going on.......may Celestia smile fondly on the plight of your literary endeavors bud. Sounds like there are more who may have just a bit more arrogance than you do? if not then they have much more audacity for sure!

Personally I like this sight much better. EqD may or may not have better content....but at least here the authors have more fun, even if most of them couldn't write to save there lives (my self included).

I have an acquaintance in school who has a bachelors degree in creative literature. I was telling him how I started doing minor work on a fanfic sight and he immediately condemned all fan fic sight stating that 98% of us just suck........ I showed him my story (the one you gave me the "honest review") and his reaction was about the same (he basically gave me the same suggestions for improvement followed by a lesson in show vs. tell).

After reading your work Mr.TRB, I believe you have skills that stand far above most of the rest of us, so if I were you, I wouldn't worry so much about what others consider of your submissions. I mean everyone is going to have different opinion on your quality....what matters most is your confidence (which I don't think you lack...AT ALL)! Example......while I enjoy reading the Eragon books....I also recognize that the Author has combined Lord of the Rings with Star Wars, and his style is.....not quite high quality. Yet he is still good enough to have multiple hit sellers. I'm sure you would as well if you were to write a novel.

Dismiss your frustration and stay arrogant with the confidence that you will do just fine and that you remain (IMHO) in the top 2% of fan fic authors.

Hmm.. I should use that for the title of my next story. That way it's sure to get in dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/Twilight_Sparkle_lolface.png
