    A quick Slamjam postmortem note

So, the creator of one of the OCs I wrote about just about flipped his lid at me because I gave his character a gay shipping story, ruining his message of platonic bromance and emotionally vulnerable heterosexual dudes.

    Part 1: Poetry

“But I hate poetry” well that’s because you’re doing it wrong. A poem of the type that we were told to write in this class is just a short, condensed piece of work that shows who you are and what you do as a writer.

Lesson 0: Learn the rules before you break them

I know full well that I'm talking down to a lot of people in this post--my excuse is that writing it out is also a way for me to refresh the lessons in my own mind. Story tags are because I plan to go back and "grade myself" based on my own advice as i write these.

    All is right in ponydom

    I know, I said I would do a thing, and then I didn't.

I will. I promise. Next post.

But first, I need to share this with you: a friend has informed me that One Terrible Writer has posted all of his stories, previously thought to be lost forever, on fanfiction.net.

Knighty HATES him! Honolulu-area baker reveals how to improve your writing with 3 simple rules!

I’ve seen it a few times, and you probably have too: people will say stuff along the lines of “I bet this person took a community college course in creative writing and now they think they're so great.” It’s a very resonant insult for classists like me. Besides, it’s rooted in fact: the level of literacy needed to pass community college courses in this town is miserably low.

no but for real though stuff is happening · 7:32am Sep 18th, 2012

First things first: I've marked "Cloudborn" as being on hiatus. I should've done that a long time ago, actually. It's just... I kept opening up the barely-started chapter 5 and not doing anything. I kept thinking I knew how to go forward with it, but every time I couldn't write more than a few lines because I'm at such a tricky spot and I'm so unsatisfied with how I'm writing this.

While that was happening, I wrote Birth/Ancient Heart/Ardor which is now awaiting EQD judgement and has been for nearly a week.

I've also written maybe a third of a fun lighthearted action thing and started brainstorming on sequels for "Ardor" on what might end up being a quartet of fics about why Celestia and Luna are the only Goddesses who we ever see.

Believe me, it hurts me to do this. I love Cloudchaser and Flitter, and Moondancer and all their squadmates and friends dearly. I want this story to be too much to let it die. But I'm driving myself into a hole trying to make it "right."

For now, it's time for me to get some writing done before I can go back to talking to my little head-ponies.

Sometime soon--probably before I even finish the action thing--I'm gonna blast out a short scene starring Flitter and Moondancer that some of you ponies out there might like. Depending on how things go, a Cloudchaser vignette or three might follow.

I'm writing fun things even if they're not what I originally wanted to write. I really am going crazy with anticipation when it comes to The Ancient Heart's First Beating. It's just this lovely piece that made me feel a lot better when I wrote it, and I think it'll give at least some of you the same happiness.

This is what it's like when an ADD kid decides he wants to be a Riter with a capital W, fillies and colts. When the amphetamines go in, words come out, but nopony can really predict what kind of words they're gonna be.

Jinx, even if what I'm writing isn't directly a love-letter to you and your work any more, you continue to inspire me. Besides--if you're paying attention to my Cloudchaser and Flitter, I want to keep writing them and let them live a little more of that life that they've been given.

I think it's neat that I can't predict what you'l be up to :pinkiehappy:

And I'll be re-reading your Chaser and Flitter whenever I have need to think of mine... so it goes both ways :ajsmug:

Something about what you just said made me realize that there's another way I could try to REALLY cheese for views with "Birth." I could write a clop scene starring the OC and post both the original and the extra scene on EQAD. The OC is a "goddess of love," mind you, so there's absolutely no reason it would have to be a cheap sell-out sex appeal thing.

Regardless, I have every confidence that the EQD frontpage cheat I'm already planning will be good enough. An OC alicorn clop scene can come later even though the idea's really interesting and could go a bunch of different ways. I could even post it as its own thing or whatever.

Now I know what it was that made me think of that. Your Luna.

Pony Porn and cheap jokes always seem to be a hot seller from what I am understanding from multiple folks that post there hard work out there. Thats why I hold no hope of my first fic "Destroyed are The Fragile Friendships" will never be a featured fic.....mainly cause there's no sex (not to mention that it just sucked as first ever.

Keep up with your stuff. I wish I knew a way to get over your block with "cloudborn" which I need to checkout but I have no knowledge of such endeavors.

You will retain my support at least. Personally I find EQD as a fairly pretentious and stuckup clop site. Not that clop is horrible...I just think that there is more to fan fics than just horse sex and bad jokes :twilightangry2: then again.....I may be wrong being presented with the sheer volume of fans that flock to such stories (myself included).

First of all, EQD stands for Equestria Daily. They don't post horse porn or you would've seen Cloudborn there.

Horse porn and bad jokes are both legitimate things, though I admit that I'm the worst one when it comes to being snotty about the featured box. I even wrote a (really awful) fic that's one long metaphor hating on all the things I don't like about fimfic.

If we're honest with ourselves, everyone's first steps as a writer are embarrassing. We write things that get cancelled before we even get anywhere. We pour heart and soul into things that suck. We roleplay, we write in first person, we (not me--other people) write trollfics.

And we write fanfiction.

Make no mistake, a lot of the "good" writing you see here are just authors who are in the process of rising above their comfort zone. Writing fanfiction gives easy access to other authors, critical feedback, and--more importantly--validation. I say more importantly because whether they realize it or not, that's the main reason why a lot of us write. We like to be told that we're great. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's a sort of trap, you know? If you move on to something more serious, you won't have any of that any more. Not that most of us here are ready to move on to serious projects anyway.

Be that as it may, you should still be proud of your writing. When I told my old teacher, with a self-deprecating chuckle, that i was writing fanfiction, she said that I was just "putting in my ten thousand hours of mastery." That's a good way to look at it, don't you think?

Anyway, those are my thoughts for the day on fanfiction writing.

Yeah I know what EqD is...... :twilightblush: Just got it mixed up with a different site.....for the life of me I can't remember the name but it was veeeerrrry Rule 34 (or whatever it is) Friendly......I saw many pissed off post on there as well as much trolling on cloppers (Personally I like clop and stupid bad jokes but as comedy not a turn on). As I had said in many blogs defending authors from beatings they take from commentators such as I... as long as everyone is having fun...thats what matters the most.....I couldn't agree more with your point of views on validation and the "ten thousand hours of mastery" comment your teacher told you is a very cool perspective.... I feel a bit less embarrassed for enjoying my writing.

BTW if you ever get a chance I would appreciate if you cold read my piece and give me feed back on improving.... I just seem to get the standard "check your grammars and proof read" comments so feed back from an experienced perspective would be much appreciated.
