Over the past week I have taken a little look at the darker side of fan fiction literature, a lot of the ones I have read seem to contain lots of violence, gore and the killing of characters in the show. Which is all well and good I suppose if you like that sort of action prose in a story, but for the more advanced reader the darker side of fan fiction sure is a challenge for many writters, especially when its my little pony. Since the show is gaged towards a happy and joyful atmosphere, its is not an easy task for any writer to approach the dark side and add a bunch of colourful Ponies to it.

That was until I came across this one story that completely blew me away, for this one in particular has certainly conquered all of the previous mentioned trails and tribulations of above. True ascension paints a more intricate picture of the darker side of writing, while leaving out gory action violence and tickling that curious part of your mind in a way that leaves you guessing till the very end. A lot of people tend to sway more towards violent ends as a way of creating that dramatic finesse, which is often the easy way around the application of applying the dark side of story telling to Equestria. But what I loved about this one is how the author uses clever misdirection as a way of provoking the mind, and effectively misleading the reader. Which is a brilliant trait if you like writing mysteries, which is exactly what this story is, shrouded in mystery, in fact its practically swimming in it!

The story starts when Twilight wakes up in a strange reality, she has memories at first of what she thought was drinking a substance that may have ended her life. As Twilight begins to investigate the world around her, desperately picking apart things that can tell her anything about this new world, but the best part about this little description is how the author makes it difficult for her to tell whether it is day or night. And thus begins this process of deductive reasoning, as time goes on she starts to come up with theories like, created worlds through the use of magic.

What’s great about this author is the use of diversification in a small scope of availability, that is to say the author was able to diversify the story and come at it from various angles within a small scope of the availability they had created within the story itself. And the introduction of Luna into the mix gets your mind wondering so many other things, but this is not the Luna you or I would be too familiar with. She’s not in love with Twilight, or trying to harm her as I have read in other stores.

But instead has brought her here, to this special place for some reason. This world is one that is made only for the Two sisters, and yet Twilight has been brought here. And the Luna that we meet in this story appears to have some kind of purpose for Twilight, although that information is made available I did either not see or its not meant to be seen for it is not there. But the really great twist is the end, as Twilight wakes up she begins to make out an Alicorn in front of her, and its Celestia looking after her because the lavender pony has a fever. Which leaves you guessing, was it really a dream just caused by her fever, or was it now someone imposing Celestia instead of Spike, only to make Twilight relive that experience again and again. And it is these questions my Pony loving readers, that makes a dark mystery in the equestrian world, well worth the read.

Thanks for reading.
