What the fandom did for me · 3:10pm Feb 21st, 2016
Before I started writing fanfics, I was a fan of the show largely for the the fan projects that came out. I enjoyed acting and singing, and animation (though I couldn't do it myself), and was frequently involved in theatrical events in high school. When I went away for college, I found that nobody really believed in my abilities and I started to doubt myself as well. It didn't help that other freshmen were being cast in lead roles, while I was being neglected. There are few things more painful than doubting yourself. Not helping was the fact nobody in my acting classes seemed to think I was very good.
Then after listening to some audio recordings of certain fanfics while browsing Youtube, I realized I had plenty of ideas that I wanted to see from the show and that I would love to see the writers explore. Sadly, I realized those writers can't read my mind. So, I decided to write something and see if anybody liked it. After asking my sister to create this OC for me, I wrote my first full fanfic "Friends and Family" and posted on January 5th. It felt cathartic and satisfying to finally put something I had been pondering in my daydreams onto the website for others to see because it made the story feel alive. Soon after, I wrote "We Will Fly" which received more praise than I could ever have anticipated. Seeing people enjoy my work and saying so, while offering me constructive criticism that didn't threaten my personal hopes and dreams, was the most relieving and satisfying experience I have had in quite some time.
Writing fanfics and receiving everybody's feedback, has not only provided some happy distraction from everyday life; it has saved me. You all made me feel immeasurably appreciated and unconditionally loved as a friend and family member. Because of the fandom, I have purpose and hope. I have a new way to measure my personal worth and creatively express myself.
So to the fandom that inspired me to create, motivated me to keep trying, and brought new vigor to my life, I say thank you.
