As always, lovely pic done by RileyAV

"Hey Sonata, what are you doing up so late?" He asked after taking a glance at his watch to confirm that it was already past midnight. In the short span it took to walk from the driveway to the porch, the quaint-looking sedan the young man drove beeped and flashed its headlights twice to guarantee its owner that the remote key had in fact locked the doors.

“Just sky watching,” she said. “It helps calm me down.”

“And what is it you're calming down from?”

"Someone had the bright idea of letting Aria be in charge of cooking dinner tonight," she replied, expressing her obvious displeasure. "We had tacos. Tacos!"

"It was my idea. And I thought you loved tacos."

"Yeah, but today's Thursday! She's messing up the natural order of things."

He flashed a grin. "Well...if that's really the reason you're up..." Making his way to the door, the young man felt a tug on the back of his jacket and he stopped to turn around.

Sonata still had a light hold on his jacket when she asked, "Could you just...hang out a bit?"

"Something up?"

She was quick to respond, still holding onto his jacket. "Do I need a reason?" The moon was bright enough to clearly illuminate Sonata’s face. And from the way she looked at him it was obvious there was something on her mind. With some hesitance her hand dropped to her side.

"Hmm...I guess not." He sat next to the girl, leaving some space between them. Even though he started to feel chilly he remained waiting patiently for whatever she wanted to voice out.

Eventually she broke the silence when she said, "Thanks for not telling the girls about the talent show."

"Well they found out anyway," he said, making reference to the participation trophy that the talent show’s organizers gave her after the event, along with an apology for the treatment she got. While he wasn’t usually a fan of such trophies, Sonata found sentimental value and kept it. Of course, it was quickly found by Adagio as a result of her usual snooping.

"But at least it wasn't from you,” she said with a giggle. “Thanks."

"No sweat." After observing the stars for a bit he glanced over at Sonata, seeing her shift and tremble with her arms tightly crossed over her chest. “You wanna go inside? You look like you're feeling a bit chilly.”

“But I wai-...” She shook her head. “I wanna hang outside for a bit longer. Just us two.”

“I could run in to grab your jacket, then.”

“You really don't have to,” she insisted.

"If you're sure,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders.

“Yeah, because I can just do this.” Sonata shuffled closer to him, pressing herself right against his side. She then slipped her hands into his right jacket pocket and hummed victoriously to herself. “Toasty warm!”

"Are you kidding me?"

"See? I'm ok, now." As she said that, he could feel Sonata’s hands dive even deeper into his pocket, practically jabbing against his side.

"I'm not,” he growled out. “This is awkward as heck."

Without waiting for her response he took off his jacket and, with a flourished twist of his arms, draped it over her. Sonata’s hands slipped imperceptibly out of his pocket from the maneuver.

She accepted the gesture without further fuss, wrapping it tight against herself. However, after sniffing his collar led to her leaning in to smell his breath, she wrinkled her nose and immediately leaned away. "Eww, you smell funny."

"I just had a bit of wine. Job interview."

"Yeah, Aria mentioned that. You get the job?"

He immediately grinned. "Considering I've known the interviewer since I was a kid, and said interviewer—who is actually my future boss—was the one that reached out to me, the 'interview' was more or less a formality."

She continued to wait for a response as though not understanding his point. "...so that means...?"

He chuckled despite himself. "Yes, Sonata. I got the job,” he answered simply.

Hearing that her eyes lit up and she cheered, "Cool! Congrats."

"Yep. I can finally put my teaching certificate to use."

"Teaching certificate?"

He said after nodding, "Gonna be the new history teacher at Canterlot High. The principal there and my family go way back. The vice principal too, I guess, since she's Celestia's sister..."

"Canter...oh..." She looked away, hugging the jacket tighter around herself.

"What's wrong?"

"N-nothing," Sonata stammered. Once more the moon's light made it possible to see her worried expression. "What?" She asked, looking and sounding self-conscious from his attention.

He simply repeated his question. "What's wrong, Sonata?"

She chewed her lower lip and glanced down in contemplation before looking back at him. Sonata was conflicted, but after a few seconds of silence she resigned herself to some sort of decision. "Say...you remember, after we first met, how you found out about me, Aria and Adagio...? About that..."
