Does ´over the top' scenes ruin good entertainment? · 3:17pm Dec 13th, 2015
Finally, a moderate shot.
No, 'over the top' antics, animations and so on are part of the formula of TV shows, comics and more. Totally optional, too. Since the artists and animators have more reign in how to express themselves, they tend to draw, act or play exaggerated scenes that tend to be funny when it plays right. The moment of the scenes is crucial and it cannot be repetitive. In my personal opinion, short burst of it in the righ places and time with the right characters doing th antics can massively improve a scene.
In my MLP, Pinkie is the perfect example of it. The problem is that recently (at least for me) she massively over-plays this role. Her references to other shows, her fourth-wall breaking and so on can be incredible funny and clever. One little moment that I will never forget is the G3 reference in the "Too Many Pinkie Pies" episode. It was surreal and unexpected, but funny. Her antics in the "Party Pooped" episode were hilarious for me.
But when she exaggerates the role, like in "Filli Vanilli", she can be a real pain to deal with. I don´t mind the fact that she made Fluttershy cry, it´s the fact that she was totally mean and cruel in the way she "explained" the situation to her. I don't know, for me, that wasn't her best moment, and there are definetly more. And don´t about forget her forced jokes in "Games That Ponies Play", URGH!
Other characters do the same from time to time. And recently, I started to hate Discord for this same trope. I believe I got off the original point, I love Pinkie's character in the end. The point is, as long as an 'over the top' act doesn't overstay it´s welcome, then I can totally enjoy it.
Thanks for reading.
