My Thoughts on: Rarity Investigates (MLP season 5 , episode 15) (SPOILERS...DU) · 2:55am Sep 21st, 2015
This episode is one of those that seemed alright at first, then grows on me after watching it. I think I might like this episode more than "MMMystery on the Friendship Express", and that is one of my favorites from Season 2.
Heh, this was quite enjoyable. I never expected I'd see ponies and film noir mixed together, but the staff did a great job here. Using many of the (appropriate for the rating) sterotypical noir tropes, to good effect, and still poking a bit of fun at them at the same time. I liked the result. While the mystery of the "crime" was pretty thin, the journey more than made up for it. Plus it was nice to see Rarity and Rainbow play off each other, just the two of them.
Another neat thing was expanding a bit on the Wonderbolts, like meeting Spitifre's mom and even veteran Bolts. But let's talk about the real star of the show here: Soarin'! Great to see him have a larger role for once. I liked what we got. While he's still pretty laidback and friendly, he has no problems steeping up and be a hard-ass the minute the situation demands it. Just to flip back to eating pies of the floor. I love this guy. Byw. does this mean Soarin' is the second in command of the Wonderbolts, or was he just the one with highest seniority of the Bolts at that very moment?
Heh, I love seeing the incompetence of the Royal Guard. Good thing the ponies have a pair of alicorns ruling the nation.
As I said, it's an enjoyable episode, but unfortunately not particularly big on jokes and gags. The noir elements, a few new bits about the Wonderbolts and Soarin' makes up for it somewhat, but I'd still place it around or just below the middle of the season so far. Oh well, they can't all be winners. So i am going to give this episode a four (out of six) cutie marks.
