I know I'm late to saying this, but we're only half-way through the season and already you hype up the return of Little Miss Control Freak, emphasis on the freak?
For me, I... honestly don't want to see Starlight Glimmer reform (which, let's face it, will likely happen), and I can say why now, due to this "preview" and the cameo in Amending Fences.
She's been stalking Twilight Sparkle and planning her downfall. She's been doing this all season, it seems, with nothing but malicious intent. This seems lower-grade in power, but in terms of outright evil, I currently place her up there with Tirek, perhaps more. Tirek? Tirek is honest-evil. Stupid, chaotic, getting power and looking past that never.
Starlight Glimmer has done attempted kidnapping and brainwashing. Now we find she's been stalking Twilight Sparkle since the start of the season, with clearly harmful goals. And in her last speaking role, she still insisted she was in the right and seems to have been one Twilight Sparkle away from murdering her "friends" of the nameless town. Simply because they brought up and shot her own words back at her. She is manipulative and, well, frankly evil.
By choice, she is evil. Her Cutie Mark, like Twilight, is an indication of sheer raw magical talent, not that she's destined to brainwash and convert the unwilling into mediocrity beneath her hoof.
As Cadance is written to say in the IDW Comic "Fiendship is Magic" over Sombra's past... However sad one's life was, ultimately it was that pony's choice, and no one forced them into anything. Having a sad life doesn't justify becoming a tyrant or monster. In other words, I'm already past any point of caring about a Freudian Excuse.
And, in the words of Weather Report, misanthropic manga character:
"The worst kind of evil is the kind that doesn't even know it's evil."
When you're the kind of being that makes a misanthropic ass more likeable and have more sense, you're sickening.

Honestly, I want to see her return, but only so she can be properly defeated. Like thoroughly, undeniably defeated and grinded into the ground, so she will never rise up again. What surprises me here is the sense that Starlight could get into what seems to be an university room and Twilight's castle. I thought her actions deserved a search warrant on her face, no?
