What is quinoa?
Quinoa...from Quechua kinwa or kinuwa )[2] is a species of the goosefoot genus (Chenopodium quinoa), a grain crop grown primarily for its edible seeds. It is a pseudocereal rather than a true cereal, as it is not a member of the true grass family. As a chenopod, quinoa is closely related to species such as beetroots, spinach and tumbleweeds. As a member of the Amaranthaceae family, it is related to and resembles amaranth, which is also a pseudocereal. It is high in protein, and is tolerant of dry soil.

I dunno if you already knew that. Anyway, at my school, "Quinoa!" can often be heard, usually said randomly during class, most commonly during Italian class. It is often used by one of my fellow students as a username for online class competitions.
How did this start? (I was there when it started, so bear with me. It's story time!)
On the way to a field trip to Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the girl students on the bus apparently had quinoa for lunch. Suddenly, as we were going through the tunnel, another girl said "Quinoa! *insert name here* has quinoa for lunch!" This was answered with more cries of "Quinoa!" "Quinoa!" until the whole bus was filled with the sounds of "Quinoa!" being shouted at the top of 15 girls' lungs.
Why is it popular? After the field trip, (I am speculating here) somebody most likely said something like this: "Hey! Remember when we were all shouting 'Quinoa' on the bus?" (end speculation) It just caught on from there.
