WARNING: This blog is going to be controversial. You are well within your rights to totally disagree with me, respectfully. I believe everyone has a right to their opinions. Mine is not better than yours and yours is not better than mine. This is just the way I see it, nothing more. If you wish to comment on it, do so respectfully as I welcome all opinions.
The reason for this blog is that I was cussed yesterday for using the term ‘mental rape’
Before you read please bear in mind I am speaking from a purely SCIENTIFIC LINGUISTIC and REALISTIC WORLD POV on a kids’ TV show and NOT a social or sociolinguistic. This is a children’s show for entertainment of girls (and boys) and bronies. But I also critically assess what is happening so I know what my daughter is watching.
Okay so here goes:
I’m guessing everyone has seen the new season episode.
Clearly in the 1st part, (feel free to go back and watch), when the mane 6 goes into town they are welcomed by DD and Party Favor. All the townsfolk have creepy smiles. Okay. So does DD and Party Favor. The mane 6 are very uncomfortable. Okay.
They want them to be friends, be equal, to join their cult and village, all those “pure intentions.”
Party favor walks across to Rarity ONLY and stares at her creepily. Staring ONLY AT HER. She’s pretty.
He has intentions for every mare to “be friendly with” but he stares ONLY at Rarity. If he wanted to be “friendly” with everyone why didn’t he gaze around at all of them? All of them are pretty I think.
So, I coined him as “mentally raping” Rarity.
While mental rape is not an official English language phrase yet, many define it as stealing someone’s ideas and using it against them. Where I come from, people here use it as being looked at in an uncomforting, perverted manner. The offender has “thoughts” going through his/her head. I don’t think I need to spell out what those thoughts are.
In this specific case, the offender was male (Not generalizing the male sex) and USUALLY I said, a male looking a female like that, has ulterior thoughts in his head. It equally have creepy females too.
So, I posted onto a group forum that he was mentally raping her.
Some made a BIG issue of it, that it’s disgusting to think that on about a children’s show and don’t use the word rape so casually.
Why not to use to word “rape” so casually?
Because it relates to heinous crime, they say, and that I’m amongst strangers and I’m scum to use it casually. BULLSHIT.
“I massacred my test paper yesterday” Massacre is a heinous crime done to communities even today yet LOOK! It’s is a casual sentence. But not as bad as rape. “My coworker murdered his computer with overload” hmmm, still used casually but murder is not as bad as rape. NOTE: Not a social POV, but SCIENTIFIC, LINGUISTIC!!!!
I loved their reactions when I trolled them with my Linguistic jargon. I just wanted to see what made them tick or tick off. They finally got really mad and cussed me. I was going to post a troll face but the mod stepped in. DAMN.
Now, after all this, let me say this.

Rape is Rape. It is heinous and just as much as any other crime it has out there, I don’t want to happen to anybody.
There are no dark words, good word, bad words, etc. words are words. What value we give to it is what power it will have on us.
Language is what we use to communicate and describe our world. Words are a bunch of meaningless, arbitrary, phonemes that we use to put out world into context that our minds can calculate.
Eg.The word ‘cunt’ meant simply ‘woman’ now through pejoration, it is a derogatory word for vagina. But people cringe at it. Why? Because the word is bad??? Or people made it so??
I am not trying to reclaim words that describe the dark side of our world to be “good” or neutral, I am simply saying that it has no power over me, and if I use it in a different context, it doesn’t mean that I am relating it back to the meaning as some people know it but I am transforming it to use in a way it is going to be effective.
Language changes and it changes fast. Words we consider “good” or “bad” now will have no effect on anyone probably 10 years or even 5 years from now. but for now
I totally agree. Now a days, teens and kids are making up weird and outrageous words. They mean nothing unless you give it meaning. I always tell that to people, but they ignore me. I hope that people will learn that lesson. Probably not, but we can still dream.

Well words we consider weird now may very well be part of the language in the future.
I just wish people will do some more critical thinking than just accept things as they are.
