    Headcanon Discussions: Equestrian Calendar

Hi. This is my first blog post. Big whoop. Anyways, in whatever blogs I plan to make, they'll be separated out in sections for what I'll be discussing.

This time, we'll be talking about a headcanon I've been figuring out. That is: how dates are written in Equestria.

The Equestrian Calendar, Part II

Last time, I covered the names of the months and how many days per month there were. This time, I'm going to improve upon this.

As I've read some stories on the site, I've been more aware of how people portray date and time in Equestria. The majority of stories use Earth's Gregorian calendar, while a few others create their own, and one notable story I read would be where the seasons are their OWN months. (but I never got a definite understanding on how many days per season there were.)

So, after thinking on it, I remembered that I pointed out that because Celestia controls the sun in both daily revolutions and bringing it closer or pushing it away from Equus when needed, that a Leap Year would be unnecessary because the months would not become out of sync with the seasons (as on Earth, Leap Years fix this problem). Then, I thought to how I laid out my months before, a variating schedule of 30 and 31 days in a 12 month period that ultimately ended up having 364 days, and if you wanted an even 365, one would have to change and ruin the pattern. And that's just unacceptable. :facehoof:

So I thought about re-designing the calendar completely, and came up with this: 8 months, 2 months per season, 50 days per month.

Although having 3 months per season sounds reasonable, a part of me calls for having 2 months per season, honestly. We're trying to be different. So, with the idea above, Equestria would clock in at a 400-day-per-year calendar. Below is the revised scheme for the months of the year, plus the dates in which each season begins. And as an added bonus, when holidays occur.

Seasons

Winter - 25th Glacia until 25th Vernia
Spring - 25th Vernia until 25th Calidus
Summer - 25th Calidus until 25th Foliatus
Autumn - 25th Foliatus until 25th Glacia

Holidays

Hearth's Warming Eve and Day - 24th and 25th of Novius, respectively
Hearts and Hooves Day - 1st of Vernia
Winter Wrap-Up - 24th of Vernia
Summer Sun Celebration - 25th of Calidus
Nightmare Night - 31st of Harvestus
New Years Eve and Day - 50th and 1st of Glacia and Novius, respectively

However, there's a few small discrepancies with the event named 'The Running of the Leaves'
1) I'm not sure if this is a holiday or an event for fun.
2) It occurs before Nightmare Night's episode, but would be logically made closer to the start of Winter
3) To follow Earth chronology, the Winter Solstice, which is the 21st of December (25th Glacia on Equus) occurs AFTER Halloween/Nightmare Night.

So what do I do? I'll let whoever reads this (shit anyways?) help me figure this out.

Months

January (Novius)
April (Vernia)
May (Floriatus)
June (Calidus)
August (Augustius) I ran out of ideas. :twilightblush:
September (Foliatus)
October (Harvestus)
December (Glacia)

Months removed: February, March, July, November
yes i'm aware Floriatus and Foliatus are quite similar

So, what do you think about this? What can be improved? Am I overanalyzing this? Is it a good endeavor? Is the meaning of life really 42?

Next time, I'll discuss my ideas on the major events in the world and my ideas behind the Era-based year.
To recap, from The Equestrian Calendar, Part I:

... and to use an Era-based year, like in The Elder Scrolls or RuneScape, where certain significant events could determine a new era.

On the topic of the Eras, I don't have any set ideas except for the fact that the First Era was when Faust (my headcanon MLP god) created Equus (not my headcanon, but a widely accepted one), and the 6th Era began when Celestia banished Luna (Nightmare Moon).

Mugoloo out.
