I've been cool with Fim updates; I've been fine with banners being gone; hell, I was fine when the user card became the Fim banner, but fuck, I finally found something to bitch and moan about.
At 3:54 AM US Central Time on Christmas eve of 2014, knighty, Fimfiction overlord supreme, posted this gem, which states why banners were removed. To quote directly in case you don't wanna scroll that far:

I don't think it's any secret anymore that the site is going general fiction sometime in the near future. This means pony branding is going to have to go anyway, so whether I had any other reasoning, this was an inevitable change
edit: Apparently this wasn't as common knowledge as I may have thought, but it's not something that should be that surprising. Why would we not take a platform that works well like fimfic and expand it out? ;) For the record, fimfiction.net will still exist and look like it does now. This is why tags exist, so you can always use fimfiction as a purely pony site if you're not interested in other fandoms!
Now, this may sound ignorant, but this site was my little slice of perfectly coded pony fiction heaven, with Fanfiction.net being the forbidden zone to me where everything was. There are many other things wrong with this quote...such as:
1. FIMfiction.net has FiM in the damn title.
2. Every story when new people file in will be ponies.
3. I now have to add 'Post a story before Fim becomes trash' to my brand spankin' new list of 'Things to do before Fim becomes the newest furry porno site'
TL;DR knighty sold out and fucked up Fimfiction.
