100 Years of War · 10:11pm Aug 4th, 2014
At 11pm on August 4th, 1918, the British Government's deadline to Imperial Germany, demanding their immediate withdrawal from soverign territory in Belgium, expired. There had been no response to the ultimatum.
And so, on this night, at this time, 100 years ago. Great Britain was at war. What was once called 'The War to End All Wars' had begun.
The 20th century has been a tale of terrible conflict, and immense hope. The blood and bodies of countless millions was shed across the Earth entire, as lives and nations alike were spun into a ceaseless waltz of conflict and revolution.
Today, the situation in the world still seems dire. Perhaps, to our eyes, as dire as the days, weeks and months leading up to that fateful hour a century ago. We see conflict in Gaza, in the Ukraine. We see old hostilities and fears and prejudices rearing their heads, and a growing fear for the future we share.
Tonight, and in these coming days, let us reflect, and remember.
And let us never forget, for those who forget the mistakes of the past, are doomed to repeat them.
