apologies in advance for whiny self-indulgent post >.<;; buuuut...tbh, I don't really get what good having the "dislike" button on fics is. It's one of the things that put me off joining this place for a long time, knowing that I am entirely waaaay too sensitive and if I got a lot of dislikes it would hurt my wittle feelings, boo hoo etc. and...okay, I just got ONE the other day, but have been thinking about it entirely too much, sooo...a little venting.

Obviously, I get that not everyone is going to like my stuff, or anyone's stuff, for whatever reason - that's totally cool! But I honestly don't get the purpose of having a button to tell someone "I didn't like this", but no further details - surely, all it can do is upset them? And it's not constructive at all, which is my main problem - if you disliked something enough to let the author know you didn't like it, rather than just backclicking, I (personally! total subjective opinion etc) feel like you should be able to tell them exactly what you didn't like about it, otherwise how are they ever going to improve as a writer? This goes doubly if they're new to writing or to the fandom - obviously, not everybody is exactly welcoming of constructive criticism, but I'm sure most will find it a whole lot better than just negativity with no further feedback.

I do feel like an idiot for thinking this much over one tiny dislike, but...all I can think of is "is it my writing? The characterisation? The plot? *insert TELL MEEEEEE Loki gif*" I'm always nervous when I post my first fic in a fandom, and if I'm doing something wrong, I want to know what it is! I want to improve - I'm not super srs about fanfic, at the end of the day I write for fun, but I do care about keeping characters IC and things like that, because I love these characters and I want to do them justice! And I'm sure lots of (not all) other fanfic writers feel the same way. If someone gets lots of dislikes, rather than specific feedback on what, exactly, people don't like about their fic (unless it's against the rules of the site or offensive or something ), it's probably just going to put them off writing altogether, rather than give them motivation to improve. And I feel like that's the opposite of what we should be encouraging, especially for a community as creative (in art and music as well as fic) as the brony one.

...if I get a sudden influx of dislikes now, I probably deserve it, lol :p anyway, I am working on a new fic atm (spoiler alert: it's gonna be Rarijack, because joint OTP!) which will hopefully be up in the next couple of weeks! ^_^ but yeah. sorry for the whiny post, again if you're reading - if anyone wants to defend the "dislike" button, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I agree with you. It would definitely be better for any writer, if a box pops up after a person clicks on the dislike button, so they're forced to give a small feedback on why they don't like it.
Even if probably some will say "I hate this fic" it still would improve the site and probably even help the writers out.
Why they never thought of adding that is still a mystery, but I hope they will do it in the future. :ajsmug:

agreed, that's a really good idea! I bet there'd be fewer dislikes if you had to give a reason - as it is, there's no way of knowing whether they actually have any useful feedback for the writer, or just don't like the author/characters/pairing/genre etc. I'm sure there are people who do that without even reading the story :fluttershysad: glad to see there are other people who agree!
Yeah, I'm surprised that hasn't been suggested before too :applejackconfused: it would definitely improve the site and imo, make it seem much friendlier

That's what I'm thinking as well, that there are also people who dislike fics just because they don't like the author. This system really needs work, in my opinion. :fluttershysad:
The idea might be good, but I'm not sure if the admin likes it. Maybe one of us could post this idea in a group and see how many users even like this idea. It would atleast be a good way to see how many other users have the same opinion about this.
I don't mind who does it though.

Yeah, I know what you mean - I'm not sure how many other users would like the idea either :unsuresweetie: but no other fanfic sites I use have the dislike button, and imho they're much better and seem like friendlier places for it - if you don't like the story, how hard is it to backclick (or just not read fic's by a certain author)?
That's a good idea! I'm not sure of the best forum to post it in though...what do you think? Sorry, still a bit new to this place :twilightblush: It would be good to see what other users think though! c:
