It Aint Easy Being Breezies (Spoilers) · 11:23pm Mar 2nd, 2014
Hey all (or hey nobody, I have no idea how many people actually read these). I just wanted to comment on the Breezies because, well, I thought the episode was more or less pretty stupid.
For the first time since Baby Cakes, MLP felt like a stupid kid's show and not. . . whatever it has become these days. It was just kind of. . . boring. Fluttershy was boring, the Breezies were boring, the plot was boring and kind of lazy. Half of the episode took place in Fluttershy's cottage, when the journey of the Breezies could have taken us to all sorts of interesting places in Equestria (and beyond, apparently). Spike as the butt of the joke-- again-- was disappointing. I thought the design of the Breezies was rather silly. I get that the point of the show is to sell toys, but this was the first time (not counting EQG, of course) that it felt like something had been so obviously shoehorned in solely for the purpose of having something else to sell-- the writing is usually better than that. This was made worse by a country mile when the Mane 6 transformed into Breezies. That bit felt horrible, forced and kind of desperate, in all honesty. It continued the trend of S4 pushing all 6 into a story meant for one or two, only this time the insertion was so blatantly a marketing tool that it was disappointing to see.
This was the first time, again, since Baby Cakes that I was truly disappointed in an episode because it was just plain bad. I very much enjoyed MagMystCure and Princess Twilight for sure, but came into each with high expectations that I was disapointed in the end. This one just didn't work. Natasha Levinger did a great job with Pinkie Apple Pie, so I hope this is just a one-off.
I feel compelled to note that I think S4 has been solid, if not spectacular. Aside from Pinkie Pride and maybe Bats!, there haven't been many standout episodes, but there haven't been any disasters- until yesterday. The music has been fantastic, though. I hate ranking things like this, but I'd go S3<S4<Friendship is Witchcraft<S2<S1.
And I hate to sound the Panda-ring alarm, but the Dr. Whooves/Rose bit was funny but pointless. It's only fun when its subtle (see Hooves, Derpy).
Stay based,
gate
