Thoughts- Twilight Time · 4:01am Feb 23rd, 2014
All right, hello everyone! If you just got finished reading the "Thoughts" entry on last weeks episode (or more likely didn't see it at all) then don't worry. You aren't the only one. In fact, if you DID see it, you might then be the only one. I was really late on that one... But not this time! Gonna get it right off the bat; so without further ado, let's jump into Twilight Time!
WOO! CMC EPISODE! OK, I need to confess- I love CMC Episodes. Have ever since Call of the Cutie. The way these three little fillies interact and feed off of each other is pure gold to me. I have a soft spot for friend groups in TV shows. And the trend continued- the trio didn't disappoint me this time around! One thing I noticed this time around brought to mind a debate I've carried on with my sister for quite some time, and that is "who is the head of the CMC?" I was in the Apple Bloom camp for the longest time while she maintained it was Scootaloo. After Flight to the Finish I was inclined to agree with her, but this time around Sweetie Belle seemed to be the leader of the trio. So I've gone with the next logical conclusion (which is a conclusion I should have defaulted to in the beginning to be honest) and decided the CMC don't have a "leader." They're just a group of friends, and have a leader no more than I'm a "leader" over my friends. I've gotten off track again haven't I? Right, moving on.
Next up- Twilight! Specifically, Princess Twilight! I was really pleased to see some acknowledgement by the show's characters that Twilight is now a princess and has wings! Seriously, by the way everypony has been acting (minus some banter in the season premiere by the mane 6) you would think a perception filter has been over her wings the whole time! Oh, ah, excuse me, I mean you would think everypony never knew her wings were there in the first place. So to see how the school fillies (which apparently has tripled in size since we last got a look at the class. Different classes/grades perhaps?) treat their local princess as a local celebrity was really nice and added a bit more coherence and realism to the show's atmosphere, in a similar way Fluttershy's "baby steps" line at the end of the previous episode did.
Also speaking of Twilight- did anyone else love the diner scene to pieces? Burgers and fries are now canon. And apparently Pinkie works there, not at Sugar Cube Corner. That caused quite a bit of confusion for me. Lastly, did anyone else notice that completely depressed guy behind the CMC? What was his deal? Maybe he got stood up for a date. Dunno, let's move on.
Thinking of the school fillies brings me to another point- Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. I almost wrote off this episode when I saw indications DT would have a major role in this episode. I still haven't forgiven her for Flight to the Finish, and I likely never will. She's right next to Gilda on my hit list. However they utilized her character (oh this hurts to say) well during the course of the episode. With the "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" favor thing, the pool party bit, and the further hints to Silver Spoon's and her's relationship, I was able to tolerate her presence. Barely. I know it seems I'm playing this up, but I'm being dead serious; seeing that filly made it painful to watch. I think I need to take a step back from this. Later though, I have a entry to finish.
Hmm, what else is there.... Well the premise of the episode was really interesting to me, both the "Twilight Time" plot device and the conflict. It pleased me to see the trio continuing to expand themselves and learn new things, which most people seem to have a problem with for some reason. OK, that was poorly worded- it seems that when episodes focus heavily on them doing new things to earn their marks people don't like it. I have never disliked that part of them, in fact, I revel in it. It's always awesome to see them continually push themselves to new things, albeit for perhaps the wrong reasons. Even so, I admire it; I liken the experience to earning merit badges in the Boy Scouts (I have to go with the BSA cause I don't really know how the Girl Scouts work with that stuff. Sorry).
Also, Sweetie Belle now does magic. After I finished cheering and punching the air, I crossed it off my "Season 4 Bingo" chart. Sweet.
Last but not least- Spike, Pipsqueak, and the chart EVERYONE saw in the library. While he was nowhere near a prominent part of this episode, Spike's moments made me chuckle, and each time I had to say to myself "Poor Spike." I think I agree with LittleshyFiM in the theory that the show is one big villain origin story for Spike. Best series finale ever. Other than never having a series finale. That would be awesome.
I was so excited when I saw Pipsqueak again; I loved the little guy in Luna Eclipsed. With his adorable accent and his connection with Luna... OK it's mainly the accent. It's just too cool. And I'm going to don my conspiracy theorist hat and say that maybe this mean we'll see some Luna this season! I mean come one, they certainly have fulfilled quite a number of fan requests/questions during this season, why not add one more? Please? Pretty please?
Last of all, the chart. Yeah, you know the one. The chart that showed off a diagram and other stuff about the box in the season premiere. Nice to see that it's still relevant aside from the rainbow things we've been seeing throughout the season. You know between all the rainbow shiny stuff and the recent Rainbow Rocks announcement, I wonder if the season finale will tie in with Equestria Girls?
...
WHAT? It could happen!
Anyways, this episode gets a 4.75 from me. Yeah I know, pretty big score, right? If you're wondering why I don't go ahead and give it a 5, my answer would be I'm saving the 5 score for a truly astounding episode, for the episodes that totally just blow me away, like Cutie Mark Chronicles and Canterlot Wedding. Also... Diamond Tiara. Yep. She's that bad.
Thanks for reading you guys, and I'd like to share that I do have a story on the way! Just in case you were wondering. I don't know for certain when it will be out, but probably sometime during March. Thanks again, and I'll see you all later!
