Thoughts- Simple Ways · 3:11am Feb 9th, 2014
Hang on guys, Caleb's backup mind here. I've been rebuilding his mind from the ground up ever since it incinerated after watching "Simple Ways." Just about to throw the switch... There!
OK! I'm back. Now that that's fixed, time to talk about Simple Ways!
If you haven't figured it out yet, this episode gave me quite the strained brain. Between writer pony (awesome!), another speaking stallion (still awesome!), love and crush themes explored (surprising, but I'm all for it), stallion being borderline shipped with Applejack (KILL HIM WITH FIRE! DESTROY HIM! BURY HIM IN ICE!), and Rarity and Applejack switching stereotypes (......not sure if gusta), this was quite the episode.
The background plot of the episode- I just caught something about the Equestrian Games to be honest. Maybe it wasn't even that. Either way, that's just what it was- background. So it isn't that important. (EDIT: So apparently it was actually something about "Ponyville Day Festival" or something like that. All right then.)
Let's move on to the most unpleasant part of this episode for me- Trenderhoof. Ok, ok, he isn't that bad- objectively speaking anyways. He's just a bit of an oddball, but other than that he was all right. I liked having another stallion character- and I mean real character, with a voice and personality. Also the fact he was a writer won points with me. I also really liked the idea of having Rarity crushing on him, despite the fact she has kind of done that before to other stallions. I remember watching her unveil that shrine and saying out loud "are they gonna do a crush episode?" and punching the air when Twilight said "crush."
However- and yes, I'm going there- he lost any and all points he had with me once he put his eyes on Applejack. Yeah. No me gusta. Man Valentine's Day is less than a week away and I'm ranting about a cartoon character crushing on a cartoon character... Because of love. Yeah.... I think I need to rethink my life. A lot. I'll do that later.
So what's next on the list? Oh yes, Rarity's... Simple Ways. *Cue Peter Griffin* Also, in true Newtonian laws ways, Applejack's equal and opposite reaction.
I really didn't know what to make of this. Was it awesome? Mmm, yeah. Did I enjoy it? Mmmm... Yeahhhh. It was really entertaining to say the lest. I certainly was entertained when I heard Rares start talkin in that country accent. Man, props to Tabitha St. Germian with that voice work. It was superb. It was also quite nice to see AJ do the exact opposite with that refined accent and dressing, and their subsequent... "speak-off" I guess you can call it. That made me chuckle almost non-stop through the entire thing.
Let's see, what else... Oh yeah! Rarity's line to Spike about "being completely obsessed with a pony only to find out they're completely obsessed with another pony." Oh man that was priceless. Spike's reaction of just crossing his arms and going "Hmph." made it all the better. Words cannot describe how much I love this very small bit. I'm sure a lot of you out there can relate to it too.
No? Just me? ....Well buck.
All right, I think I've covered everything. My final score for this episode comes to 3.5 out of 5. Good episode, not quite the same level of "man I loved that" that other episodes have given me. I can't really say I loved it, but I was far from disliking it. So yeah- 3.5 out of 5. That's my personal score, and my thoughts on this episode. Thanks for reading you guys; I'll see you all next time!
