Thoughts- Pinkie Pride · 9:57pm Feb 4th, 2014
All right, getting back to the "Thoughts" series! Huh, I guess this does qualify as a series now doesn't it? Cool. I've got a series now. Series are cool. Ok, enough references, lets get to the episode.
They had me sold on this episode as soon as I heard "Weird Al." Maybe I'm just shallow, but that automatically made this episode awesome in my eyes. I'm a sucker for Weird Al. And man did he deliver- his voice work was really good, as was his singing work. Oh Luna the SINGING.... Even if the rest of the episode was flat out awful, that Pinkie Pie/Cheese Sandwich polka would have made it flat out awesome. Especially that bit of him singing "Smile Smile Smile." I was making a variety of very un-manly noises during that whole segment from pure fanboy-ness. However I do have to mention- from the second I heard the name "Cheese Sandwich" I couldn't take it seriously. I still can't. Ah well, he's still awesome.
Moving on- Pinkie Pie herself. She also was pretty good in this episode. I enjoyed the dynamic of her reacting to being outshone as party pony of Ponyville, although I had sever heart pain watching it. The things we do for love. Her song was really good; I actually got a reverse-"The Moon Rises" (awesome song by Ponyphonic, go check it out) feel. With how she goes from being sad and resigned to happy and determined, it seemed the polar opposite of Luna's serenade (music fans out there, please don't kill me). I also actually fell out of my chair from the expression she has when she's screaming at Cheese Pie after that. You know the one. The lesson here- don't lean back in a chair that has wheels on it.
Anything I missed? Hmm, let's see. Oh yes- Pinkie's rainbow eyes. This one resounded with me more, because it seemed to mark a realization for her, a development in her character. She saw how much fun Rainbow was not having and forfeited because of that. Definitely a sign of her developing her element of laughter, to me at least. Looking back I suppose the rest could be said the same of as well, but none resounded as much as Pinkie's did. A "boneless" rubber chicken as a key though? I dunno, I don't think any of these are keys in the literal sense, if that is indeed what they are.
Cheese's cutie mark story was nice, Derpy segments were charming as always, and the IRL moments were a really nice touch, both made me laugh more so than the antics already were. I was personally hoping for seeing an IRL Weird Al or Andrea Libman in the song, but I guess that would be pushing limits. Do they have those in MLP episodes where Pinkie Pie an Weird Al is involved?
Finally, last of all is Rainbow Dash's cake. I saw it as most everyone else did (the number of candles on a cake traditionally marking the age of the subject) and I'm still not convinced. Some people saw it as a canon age for RD (I think 21 or 24 was the number) but I still subscribe to Digibrony's theory (see what I did there? Subscribe?) that they're around the ages of 15 and 16. Could be wrong, but I won't lose sleep over it.
To sum up, this was a really charming episode with equal parts food for thought (if you obsess over a children's show that is) and fun humor (which can be enjoyed by pretty much everyone). 4.25 out of 5 after the weekend to think it over.
And that concludes my thoughts on Pinkie Pride! Thanks for reading guys; I'll see you all next time!
