The mane 6 aren't who they appear to be. All 6 appeared as very young foals and were adopted by thier respective families (whether they know or not is up to the writer). Before the legend of Hearths warming eve, everyone was an Alicorn, Discord is who divided the tribes and war broke out. Celestia and Luna escaped (how up to the author), and sent the rest of the royal children (now with their alicorn powers stripped) away with a spell from Starswirl, Discord finds them mid spell and disrupts it causing one of the children (a filly Cadence) to be sent to a different time. What happens when the Mane 6 find out they are adopted (if they didn't know) and what happens when a reformed discord decided to help Celestia and Luna casting a spell to make the lost alicorn children regain their alicorn state...
Entertaining Idea...
Another suggestion: Each Alicorns power was split and made into 3 individual ponies; 1 Unicorn, 1 Pegasus and 1 Earth pony. These ponies had similar looks and personalities, though their cutie marks differed a lot. So for every earth pony born, there is also a Unicorn and Pegasus counterpart born elsewhere in the world...
Just a thought.
