Rating Conundrum(Rantish qualities) · 8:08am Jan 31st, 2014
(Just a silly little blog post of little importance)
I am not entirely sure where the lines are between Teen and Everyone. Because in all other things that is a huge gap. In television, Everyone(G in movies {General Audiences}) is for developmental programming meant for infants or toddlers. Then, there's MLP which typically isn't even rated everyone, it's rated as "Y7"(What I believe to be around the upper border for "G" movies, but will typically lean toward "PG") I am assuming that translates to "Young/ 7+". Then "TV-PG"/"PG", (What I assume to be in the general vicinity of "E10+" for video-games) Then "Teen",("T" {games}, "Pg-13"{Movies} then "PG-14"{Television}). I do not know where the two ratings on Fimfiction, (Everyone, and Teen) Split.
Then there is the other conundrum I have with that. When I was younger, I watched a lot of older movies. The ratings where looser back then. "The Longest Day" A war movie depicting D-Day, was rated "G". I grew up watching that movie. Then, there is "The Secret of N.I.M.H." Also Rated "G", which nowadays might be bumped up all the way to "pg-13".
It does still happen, but a ;G; rating is extremely rare. In video games, it is not quite as rare, because an E rated game can be a lot of fun, without having anything controversial. In television, there are channels just for those, developmental channels and the like.
From what I can tell, the Everyone rating, closely represents the "G" or "E" ratings. but likely stretches farther likely crossing over into the "TV-7" category and possible even the "E10+"/"PG" levels.
It is also why I am wary of stories rated Everyone because now, anything rated a similar rating likely has little to no conflict and the stories are uninteresting. However on Fimfiction, that usually is not the case. The stigma, however, of something rated everyone often makes me reconsider reading it. It also makes it a bit harder for writers, because something they rate teen may have been able to get put as everyone meaning that it can get to a better target audience. Also those that want to write a rated everyone story would be better aware how to keep it interesting and exciting without worrying as much about it becoming something that may need a teen rating added. As for vice versa, it doesn't exactly apply to well, as anything that should be rated teen, submitted as everyone will be sent back with a request for a rating change.
As stated in the FAQ
'Everyone' = content that would be acceptable in the show, with some bending for things like alluded shipping or very light affection, 'Teen' = content that is more mature than the stuff that appears on the show but doesn't push the envelope too far (light foul language, some romantic description), 'Mature' is anything that involves material that would require an 'adult supervision' recommendation on a tv broadcast
However content that is acceptable in the show can vary extremely depending on how it is portrayed. King Sombra for instance, he is a psychopath who enslaved an entire empire for hard labor. out of context that can be very dark, however it is acceptable in the show because of the pretty colors and slight downplay on how terrible that actually is. Things can be acceptable in the show, but can be either portrayed as something would be in the show, or not. What is acceptable in the show or not is always changing, up until Chrysalis the villains had been silly for the most part. So a story about equine shape-shifters who suck the life away from their victims by taking the place of a loved one and feeding off of the affection would have been considered too dark, then boom, Chrysalis and her changeling army show up.
Rant end.
