So, the "Who Is Best Pony" question has been definitively answered.

I never thought that having Rock Lobsters in the comics would only be the SECOND-awesomest rock-related thing to come out of MLP this week, but...

    I have returned, and...

Well, I vowed to finish those outstanding fanfic projects while in Costa Rica. Instead, I devoted disturbing amounts of energy to a completely new writing project that will probably also never get off the ground.

My mom found an Easter Egg in "Rarity Takes Manehattan."

So, early this afternoon I was showing yesterday's episode to my parents. And when we first met Coco Pommel, my mom was displeased that the character named after Coco Chanel was working for the villain. Coco Chanel was great, and the character named after her should be good, my mom said.

Yes, their choice of which human to name it after was foreshadowing that she wasn't evil.

Some thoughts: · 5:45pm Dec 29th, 2013

Our transcript is up here.

A few thoughts:

1. If you haven't read the Bunnicula books, remedy that. They're hilarious, gripping, and occasionally genuinely moving, and this episode reminds me so much of that rabbit. Already some of the fan artists are drawing Angel Bunny as Bunnicula.

2. Did they get Danny Elfman to collaborate on the song? I got a strong Halloween Town vibe from this, which of course is what I'm supposed to feel, but I've rarely heard Ingram pay such direct and deliberate homage to these very specific subgenres of music.

Of course, most of Elfman's music for Nightmare Before Christmas was blatantly imitating Kurt Weill (the originator of "Mac the Knife" before Bobby Darin bowdlerized it), but hey, at least Elfman picked a good composer to rip off (in fact he picked a great one). Not sure where I was going with that one; it's late and I'm tired.

3. Twilight now has a mission-briefing hologram spell. Have I mentioned that I love this show?

4. I like the double moral. A macro one and a micro one. The localized lesson about peer pressure and how it can come from friends as well as foes, even with the best of intentions (Froborr was ecstatic about that lesson, as I knew he would be), and one about the problem with short-term solutions to long-term problems... a classic environmental lesson, and one that sort of applies to economics as well.
