Writing Advice Regarding Applejack · 7:34pm Dec 13th, 2013
My dear writers,
I have noticed a consistent error in dialect in regards to the ever-popular orange earth pony, Applejack. Specifically, the incorrect use of the word "y'all." Basically it has been used in multiple stories in the wrong form.
Basically: "y'all" is plural. So if Applejack, or another southern type who would use the term, is speaking to more than one individual, they would use the word "y'all." Were the character speaking to a singular or specific individual such as Rarity or Twilight, the character would still use the word "you," although it would probably be pronounced "ya" or "yuh."
This is a minor issue, but one which I have seen multiple times and which has bothered me slightly. I have lived most of my life in the south with the majority in Texas. While I do not fully understand the local accent and dialect, there are aspects that I have picked up. I myself have actually had to keep from saying such words as "y'all" and "ain't" when talking.
I hope that this will be of use to some you out there. I know not many will read this, but I hope that the few who do will put this bit of advice to work.
