My Thoughts On: Xenophilia · 6:15pm Dec 11th, 2013
Before I start the review I think I should probably put a mature warning here. WARNING: This is a review of a mature rated fanfiction. There we go.
I will attempt to do these things as spoiler free as possible so please enjoy.
Just before I get into this I think it's important to establish that I'm not a clopper, I only read this because one of my friends told me there was a pretty good story in between the 'colourful' scenes and to be honest he was right. As I said I am not into clop and I did find certain parts of this fiction rather disturbing to say the least but I've got to give it to the anonymous author, he's a damn good writer even if some of the characters (the ones that actually play active parts in the plot at least) don't have quite the same personalities as they do in the show. Before we go on allow me to give a short synopsis.
Lero is a human who has found himself in Equestria though unknown means. He has befriended the main 6, especially Rainbow Dash whom he sees as his best friend until one day when she kisses him and they 'get things going'.
A theme that the author explores in the fiction (other than romance, being the obvious one) was racism, now I can't say whether this is just me or not but it was rather strange to see anyone from a society that seems rather accepting of other species' to be this offensive and freaked out by a creature that happens to walk on two legs, have hands and lacks fur (actually now I'm having flashbacks to the episode 'Bridle Gossip') when there's a Dragon living in the town library, a Zebra that visits the town regularly and a couple of Donkeys who live in the town. I'm not saying it shouldn't have been in there but at the same time I wish it had been explained more exactly why the human was apparently so bad when there are so many other creatures out there who these ponies have no problem with.
Then there's the subject of the clop scenes. I'm just going to say it, I found myself skipping over parts of those scenes to see if the main story was furthered anytime soon. I'm not trying to offend any cloppers out there I'm just saying that I'm not into that kind of thing but I also didn't mind it as much in this due to the good story that the anonymous author has crafted in between clop scenes.
Then there's the fact that Rainbow Dash went all lovey-dovey. Listen, I'm all for shipping, find great couples in MLP is an easy but incredibly useful task for crafting good stories to share with the Brony community. The only time I have a problem with it is when it makes the characters act out of character, allow me to explain. Normally Rainbow Dash would be incredibly full of herself and I need to stress that she was way to calm and collected during most of this, don't get me wrong there were scenes where a calmer personality made sense to have (anyone would go soft during those little situations) but there were an awful lot of scenes in which Rainbow was in this personality for no apparent reason.
And while I'm criticising why couldn't Lero have just one flaw in him. He's a Gary-sue, he's perfect and if you wanted him to be a realistic portrayal of a good man then give him some f****** conflict in his head. Make him have to choose internally whether to do what he wants or to do what's right for the people around him. Nobody's perfect enough to do this much for other people and have no thoughts whatsoever towards their own desires.
Despite the story's flaws I did genuinely enjoy the story that the author was telling. Therefor I give this fanfiction a 4-star rating.
I'm currently reading through Waking Nightmares so my next review won't be posted for quite some time.
Oh well there's something for you to look forward to then. See you all next time!
