Do be honest, I feel bettered having read those blog posts, D. Good on you.
I read these four 'rants' and they have given me a lot to think about...
I wish to eventually write fanfiction. This will be in essence, a hobby, doing nothing more for me than to keep myself from wasting ideas, 'evolving my state of mind', providing some form of entertainment for others while at the same time, entertaining myself, and improving myself.
What I aim to improve are at the basic level: my writing skills, and at an advanced level: my ability to tell a gripping story, improve my ability to string words together in order to creatively, or even intelligently, write/speak about something. I enjoy being a little more verbose from one week to another (day to day is a bit much to aspire to). I don't like sounding like a fool when trying to explain a complex concept to someone when I understand it perfectly in my head, but lack the vernacular to describe it.
I enjoy a lot of what qualifies as 'fanfiction' a lot more than some published stories. I enjoy fanfiction and the music counterpart in roughly-equal amounts, but I enjoy fan-art somewhat... less. For example: I download a work by some artist to use as a wallpaper and enjoy it until it becomes 'stale'. This is delayed by having a large selection of wallpapers and having them switch every 30 seconds.
On second thought, the only difference between the three is the method in which each becomes stale. Fan-art as explained above, is relatively simple, but fanfiction and music are different in their own ways. Music will be listened to much in the same way I use backgrounds; in large swatches and until they get stale. Fanfiction is subtly different and yet, much the same as the others. I read it once through and enjoy it or not. I may happen upon a mood in the future where I want to re-read said fanfiction, but it is never a sure or consistent thing. Music can come 'back into style' eventually, but often after a much longer period of time than a story.
I thank you for writing these rants, as they inspire me to improve myself, not just what content I may create.
