10.10.13 - Chapter 6: Departures · 1:50am Oct 11th, 2013
This is a really special chapter for me for a number of reasons.
The first is that this is the entire reason I wanted to write this story. I tend to get inspiration from an image flashing in my head - a single moment in time or a single act or a single thing that's spoken which captures the essence of the entire project. For me, "Shade of A Crystal Empire" is based entirely on Rainbow Dash's act at the very end of this chapter (No spoilers here, folks). It was such a powerful image that I knew something needed to be done with it. I thought there was a lot of potential for a great story stemming from the consequences of that act, especially since it fits the character so well.
Leading off of that, the second reason is that this chapter marks the point where I have officially hit 50,000 words. That's something of an arbitrary number, I know, but some years ago I attempted NaNoWriMo and didn't even come close to finishing despite a good start. It's always been something I've been disappointed that I was unable to finish, so passing that mark even though I wasn't doing it for NaNoWriMo or even within a month's time frame is something of a feather in my proverbial hat. Although I would totally put a feather in one of my hats I have literally, but alas, I don't have any feathers. Yet.
And finally, this chapter marks the end of Act One, so to speak. I am very pleased so far with how its turned out, and I hope you all feel the same. I know it's been a long road to get here, folks, and I heartily thank everypony who's followed me so far, and I'd like to offer my thanks and welcome to anypony joining me now. But as you saw in Chapter 6, things just got real. Our journey here has only just begun. Now the dilemma is finally revealed, and the real story can start.
